ROBERT FROGGATT had an inspired match for Oldham RUFC’s veterans as they walloped Ashton-under-Lyne’s second team 57-12.
Froggatt scored 32 of the points, chalking up four tries and six conversions as Oldham ran riot.
Oldham were 19-5 ahead at the break through tries from Froggatt, Peter Whitehurst and Chris Davies, two of which were converted by Froggatt.
Ashton reduced the deficit to 19-12 early in the second period before becoming swamped by an avalanche of tries.
Froggatt scored a further three, all of which he converted himself, and there were two touchdowns from Sam Horsfall and one by Rick Brierley as well as another conversion from Froggatt.
The ‘A’ XV were given a fright by Village Spartans, who are bottom of division four east, before emerging 32-8 victors in their league fixture.
The Manor Park side found itself 8-5 down at half time, their only points coming from a Daryl Renshaw try which followed a good move involving Michael Collinge, Phil Graham and Jake Watson.
Oldham’s director of rugby Iain MacCorquodale told a few home truths at half time and they inspired a turnabout in their fortunes in the second period.
A try from Rob Turkington, which was converted by Graham, saw Oldham establish a 12-8 lead two minutes after the restart.
Turkington struck again after 49 minutes touching down after a move started by Nathan Taylor who was the next to get in on the scoring act.
Replacement winger Andy Bearpark sprinted 40 metres down the touchline to score Oldham’s fifth try and that was followed by a sixth in the dying minutes from Ziggy Vatikions who outpaced the defence to score.
Extra ‘A’ were beaten 62-3 at Sale where they were punished for having only 14 players and then being reduced to 13 following an injury to Jordan Foster.
The third team’s only points came from a penalty by Mark Martin.
