WITH the Oldham and District Table Tennis season drawing rapidly to a close - most teams only having three matches left to play - champions Glodwick reinforced their position at the top of Division 1 with their wins against BAe B and Hollinwood B.

Mark Ramsbottom won all his three sets against BAe B and Michael Moir performed similarly well against Hollinwood as Glodwick opened up a 22-point lead.

At the foot of the table, Phil Ashworth recorded a splendid treble in Rosehill A’s 7-3 win over their B team, although it looks likely that both teams will be playing in the second division next season.

In a closely contested match at Honeywell Lane, the hosts proved successful in beating O.T.T.C. A 6-4, Steve Barber, Adam Rowbotham and Tommy Ryan winning two sets each. Josh Boult was outstanding for the visitors with three victories.

Werneth A, with two matches in hand over the other leading sides, defeated Hollinwood B 8-2, Darryl Meredith gaining a treble and being well supported by his father Stuart and Peter Morris, both of whom won two each.

Uppermill A jeopardised Honeywell Lane B’s promotion hopes in the second division with a rather surprising 9-1 victory, helped by wins from Peter Watson (3), Keith Moores (3) and Mark Simpson (2).

Werneth C maintained their two-point lead, beating Grotton B 9-1, thanks to trebles from Karen Hill and Paul Wilkinson, with a doubles win from Bernard Davies.

Hollinwood C had a good 7-3 win at Pennine to stay only two points behind the leaders. Dave Cheetham had an excellent evening, winning all his sets by comfortable margins, and he was well supported by Phil Holmes and Joe Redikin.

In the third division, Honeywell Lane D remained on course for promotion with a 10-0 win against Failsworth B, Ken Dunkerley, Terry Cooper and Derek Naylor all being undefeated.

The youngsters of Failsworth now occupy third place in the table having beaten Coldhurst C 9-1 with treble wins coming from Paul King and Andrew Tarpey and a single defeat by Callum Jones who lost a thrilling set 10–12 in the fifth game to Dave Varney. Failsworth C were also successful 8-2 against a two-man Saddleworth B side.

Droylsden lead the table by two points following a 6-4 win over Coldhurst B, Tim Greenald winning all three sets for the Tameside team.

Oldham Owls A had a convincing 10-0 win against bottom club Coldhurst D, David Harthan, Richard Tamworth and Paul Woodward doing the damage.

Two teams lying in the relegation zone, Uppermill B and Deaf Club A, fought a tense duel, the latter winning 7-3, mainly due to an undefeated performance from Ian Cockcroft.

Fourth division leaders Unison D had a comfortable victory 10-0 against Our Lady’s who were forced to play a guest player.

The young ladies of OTTC C retain second place as a result of an 8-2 win over Honeywell Lane F, Natalie Dodd winning her customary three singles.

St Saviour’s continued their splendid run of successes, beating Honeywell Lane F 9-1, Brian Huskinson and Alex Leach winning their three matches.
