Nine in the hunt for league title

CROMPTON and Royton’s Winter League finishes this weekend with nine players still in with a shout of victory.

Derek Conway (36pts) leads the Order of Merit while grandson Lee (34pts) heads the challengers.

Andy Allen (30pts) lies third while Peter Boggiano and David Whitworth (both 28) are still in the hunt along with four others.

The penultimate Winter League event was a team medal which produced an exciting finish with a card play off needed to separate the top two teams who both returned 139.

Jordan and Mick Flint, Chris Clark and George Shepherd emerged the victors from Chris and Cyril King, Charlie Lowe and Tony Sutherland.

In third place with 140 were Andy Allen, Landy Wild, Steve Bower and Chris King.


STAMFORD’S 15-hole three man Texas scramble was won by John and Mick Bardsley and Gary Kenyon with a score of 47.5.

Less than one shot behind in second spot were Joe Bell, Keith Dockerty and Terry Merson.

Tommy Dwayre was the runaway winner of a singles Stableford at WERNETH scoring 45 points which was four clear of runner-up John Stockley.

Julie Johnson and Sheila Cooper triumphed in a four-ball betterball Stableford at SADDLEWORTH with a score of 49 points. Runners-up were Jane Wild and Deborah Mooney (47).

Wild wasn’t second best for a second time as she won a singles Stableford with a score of 42 points. Second for successive events was Mooney with 41.
