Springbank’s stunning win
Date published: 26 March 2009
SPRINGBANK caused a huge shock in the premier division of the Ashton Sunday League.
Without a win all season, they turned the form book upside down, shook it from side to side and then dropped it on the floor by overcoming title favourites Halfway House 4-3.
Steven Campbell, Terry Ross, Mark Bailey and an own goal made up Springbank’s tally, while Rocky Siddall (two) and Gary Brooks replied.
Halfway House are still on course to clinch top honours, but the result will have offered hope to nearest rivals Bridge and Warwick United, who went head to head in the semi-finals of the Vic Marsden Trophy.
It proved a one-sided affair as United emerged impressive 6-1 winners. See Match of the Day.
In division one, Home Guard maintained their assault on the title thanks to a 5-2 defeat of Wellington.
Jason Jeffries (two), Mark Baines (two) and Anthony Wolfe were Guard’s marksmen, while Jamie Pitt brace accounted for Wellington’s response.
Anglers also broke their duck for the season with a surprise 2-0 win at promotion candidates Manor. Alan Farmer and James Eastman scored for Failsworth outfit.
Despite goals from Steve Martin and Paul Tasker, Dog and Partridge, the leaders, were held to a 2-2 draw at Charlestown.
