MARK HEFFRON has clinched his first major title with victory in the National Boys Club Championships.

The 17-year-old, from Horsedge Street, defeated Caine Brunning, of Kingfisher Amateur Boxing Club, Norfolk, in the final in London.

Heffron, a student at Oldham Sixth Form College, recorded an emphatic 11-1 points win over four rounds against an opponent who is a former national title holder.

The Boarshaw boxer, competing in the 61kg category, came through six bouts and defeated four national champions en route to taking the coveted crown.

It was quite an achievement by Heffron, who was one of the youngest boxers in the competition.

He was giving away two years to some of his opponents and will still be eligible for next year’s Boys Championships.

Heffron has previously boxed for England in the European Schoolboy Championships, where he picked up a bronze medal, and he has also captured an extra junior national schoolboy title.

There will no respite for Heffron who, in two weeks, launches his bid to win a junior ABA title.
