Walkon is a topical tip at Aintree

DENMAN is the star attraction on the opening day of the John Smith’s Grand National meeting at Aintree.

Winner of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, the giant chestnut was second to Kauto Star this time round, having had a rushed preparation for the race following a heart scare.

Said to have thrived since Cheltenham, he must take all the beating in tomorrow’s totesport Bowl Chase, although his Kempton conqueror, Madison Du Berlais, could represent some each-way value back on a flat course.

Of the others, Exotic Dancer’s good form at this track makes him a potent threat, while Denman’s stable companion, Star De Mohaison, has to be respected.

For the nap, I look no further than Walkon, whose only two defeats have come at the hands of top juvenile Zaynar, and who is certain to be a popular choice among Liverpool FC fans.

Walkon’s second in the Triumph at Cheltenham gives him every chance in tomorrow’s Matalan Anniversary Hurdle and even though many will fancy Starluck to turn the tables on this flatter track, his presence in the race should ensure we secure a decent price about my selection.

World Hurdle winner Big Buck’s looks a banker in the opening John Smith’s Liverpool Hurdle, although Aintree specialist Mighty Man should give him a race in receipt of eight pounds.

Leslingtaylor, a horse with good form on flat tracks and with a victory around Aintree on his CV, should give punters a good run for their money in the Red Rum Handicap Chase.

And for those who feel compelled to have a bet in the lottery which is the Fox Hunters’ Chase, Trust Fund is suggested as he is an in-form horse representing extremely capable connections.
