THERE were some cracking weights of mainly bream and skimmers in the final round of the Cairo AC Winter League on Denshaw Vale.

The winner, Mick Jewitt, of Tight Lines, got stuck into the venue’s bream, skimmers, golden orfe and tench.

He used the pole and bronze maggot hookbait in conjunction with green swimstim to weigh in 31lb 2oz.

Darren Jones, also of Tight Lines, opted for the tip and maggot with a groundbait feeder to catch bream and skimmers for a 19lb 12oz bag.

Michael McDonald (Gilders Tackle) was third with his 15lb catch of good-sized skimmers and tench.

Fourth was Trevor Hadfield (Tight Lines) with 12lb 6oz.

PETE Cunnife (Gilders Tackle) was second in the Blundells Fishery Open on the on East, West, Ash and Pine lodges.

Using the pole at 13 metres with caster up in the water, he caught carp to 2lb and lots of silver fish for a 45lb 7oz finish.

Cunniffe made the frame again in the Blundells Fisheries open.

He employed casters, fished shallow, for a third-placed 23lb 1oz.

IAN WALVIN is a great lover of Somerset, where the fishing is brilliant.

He took part in a match on Cider Farm Fishery, finishing sixth with 50lb 9oz of carp in the 1lb to 1lb 8oz bracket.

Walvin used corn on the pole over pellet in the match, which was won with just short of 90lbs.

CONRAD Taylor, of Gilders Tackle, claimed a section victory in the Brookside Fisheries open thanks to 39lb of F1s on double-caster fished shallow.

LEE Humphries followed up his second place in the Brookside Fisheries open with another runners-up spot on the same venue.

He weighed in 35 F1s on double-maggot fished across at 12 metres to weigh in 55lb.

My former team-mate, John Bradshaw, was third with 52lb of F1s.

SANDY Barker claimed top spot in the Copthorne lakes open, with pellet right across accounting for 65lb 4oz of carp to 6lb.

Venue Guide

Rochdale Canal: Tench and bream falling to bread tactics. Some decent fish on pegs behind the houses near to the vinegar works in Middleton.

Chadderton Mill: Maggot up in the water are catching fish off every peg. I’m looking forward to seeing the weights in the evening series — it starts next month — as I believe they are going to be the highest ever recorded on the water.
