ANDY STOTT and Stan Kenyon lifted the first piece of silverware of the season at Saddleworth following their victory in the Cyril Taylor Trophy.
They had a return of 79-15.5-63.5 to win on the card from Ian Buckley and Ken Holt (72-8.5-63.5) with third going to Stuart Potts and Gary Simpson (71-7-64).
The captain’s drive-in, a four-ball betterball Stableford, saw brothers Richard and Nigel Hughes triumph with 43 points.
Runners-up were Andy Hibbert and John Millward (42) while third were Nick Edwards and Alwyn Marland (41) on the card from Steve Wild and Denis Lamb.
CROMPTON AND ROYTON crashed out of the Dunham Forest Trophy losing 4.5-2.5 in the preliminary round at Crewe where the two winners were professional Martin Beaty (3 & 2) and Mark Barrett (1up). Andy Allen halved his match.
Curt Helme (82-16-66) headed division two from Tony Jones (85-18-67).
Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were Danny Heap and Simon Higgins (43pts) from Dave Whitworth and Mark Pickering (42).
Third were Tony Sutherland and Terry O’Connor (41) on the card from father-and-son Mark and Steven Barrett, Maurice Nicholson and Paul Brannan.
Junior captain’s drive-in produced a win for Matthew Barlow (98-36-62) from second-placed Lewis Wood (99–36-63).
Crompton and Royton have been drawn at home to Heaton Park in the third round of the Mail on Sunday Classic.
WERNETH’S monthly medal produced a first division victory for Les Dooley (66-3-63) who was three shots clear of second-placed Adam Rowbotham (70-4-66).
The Sunningdale, a pairs medal at OLDHAM, produced a win for father-and-son Ian and Matt Radcliffe (63) on the card from Pete Sparks and Paul Rainford.
Steve Daubney (40pts) edged out John Coleman on the card for top spot in the first division of a Stableford.
There was also a card play-off for the top two places in division two where Andy Dowd (38) edged out Matt Radcliffe.
BROOKDALE’S qualifier for the Chronicle Cup also doubled up with the club’s qualifier for the Lombard Trophy.
Steve Boyle (69-6-63) emerged the victor from Andrew Fry (85-21-64). Third was Gary Simmonett (80-15-65) on the card from Colin Buckley (79-13-66).
STAMFORD’S monthly medal saw Chris Lees (77–10-67) take top spot in division one from Stuart Fletcher (76-8-68) and Alan Gerish (78-9-69).
Steve Fallows (84-18-66) headed division two from Pavel Livy (82-15-67) and John Sheldon (85-16-69) while the leading player in the third division was Phil Nokes (89-19-70) edging out Richard Manniex (92-21-71) and David Gilmore (90–19–71).
HEYWOOD cricketers proved they are ace golfers as they triumphed in the CLL Golf Society’s opening event of the season, a four-man team Stableford at Brookdale.
The team of Bobby Cross, Paul Ferguson, Jason Teens and Roger Smethurst amassed 92 points which was three clear of a Littleborough side comprising Stewart Jackson, Terry Taylor, Bill Simpson and Glynn Duckworth.
In third place with 88 points were the Walsden team of David Blake, Colin Greenwood, Geoff Clayton and Roger Fiddling.
