CHADDY End FC, the holders of the D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup, were made to fight all the way before overcoming Oddies in the quarter-final of this season’s competition at Clayton playing fields.

The meeting of two premier division teams was always likely to be a close-fought affair, with a place in the last four up for grabs.

Danny Dorward, the Chaddy manager, said: “It has been a stop-start season for us, so to reach the semi-finals is quite something.

“It was a pretty even contest and played in the right spirit but I think we just about edged it.

“But we certainly know we have been in a game.”

Dorward’s side should have been out of sight by half time.

They were leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Steve Barrow and the outstanding Duncan Philbin, but the tie was back in the melting pot after Mike Casson pulled a goal back for Oddies 11 minutes into the second half with a firmly struck shot.

Rob Fielding’s close-range effort soothed those Chaddy nerves, but it was game on again less than five minutes later as Oddies’ man-of-the-match Casson fired home a spectacular free-kick.

Oddies chairman Nick Parry said: “We made a real go of it towards the end with lots of corners and long throw-ins, but it just wouldn’t drop for us.

“Fair play to Chaddy, they just shaded it.”

It isn’t the end of Oddies’ season by a long stretch. They are looking forward to a President’s Trophy semi-final date with Northside and are still in the first division Shield.

As for Chaddy, they will be the team to beat when the last-four draw is made.

ODDIES: Grimshaw, Holmes, Melvin, Hill, Spence, Dawson, Dolmor, A Cropper, Everett, R Cropper, Casson. Subs: Savin, Holt, Conroy, Jarvis, Taylor.

CHADDY END FC: O’Dea, Knowles, Pickup, Frost, Deakin, Philbin, Whittaker, Barrow, Baldwin, Beckett, Alexander. Subs: Greaves, Fielding, Minnock.

Referee: E Aspin.

Hollinwood close in on pacesetters

TITLE-CHASING Hollinwood are within touching distance of Gregorians at the top of the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division table.

Paul Bennett’s side narrowed the gap to a point after a 1-0 win over third-placed Walshaw Sports last night.

Georgians, who now have four games in hand, suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat at the hands of Stockport Georgians on Saturday.

But Hollinwood were unable to take advantage of the unexpected slip-up as they were held to a 1-1 draw by local rivals Springhead at Chapel Road.

However, it may have been a point gained by Hollinwood, who rode their luck throughout the derby duel.

Springhead’s Ben Fletcher missed from six yards and team-mate Richard Bennett spooned the ball over the crossbar with only the ’keeper to beat.

Hollinwood went ahead just after the half-hour mark through prolific marksman Alan Beckett.

The hosts should have doubled their lead after the restart, but the opportunity went begging.

The miss galvanised Springhead, who equalised when Ryan Shaughnessy converted a Dale Jackman.

Shaughnessy had the ball in the net again moments later, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Avro missed the chance to break into the top five after they lost 1-0 at home to Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Meanwhile, Royton Town built on last week’s win over Walshaw Sports with another solid performance in a goalless draw against Prestwich Heys.

Chances were at a premium, although Terry Jennings could have scored on a couple of occasions.

Town’s defensive display was all the more noteworthy as they lost Ryan Hulme early on with a nasty head injury.

Northern shining bright

KHARTOUM Northern and Red Star, from David Giblin division one, joined top-flight outfits Chaddy End FC and Coppice United in the last four of the Challenge Cup.

Northern, who are on course for promotion, created a bit of stir with a 3-1 win at premier division side Hunt Lane, while Carl Beamish made it five goals in two games by scoring a brace in Red Star’s 3-0 defeat of Fitton Hill.

Coppice United moved a step closer to a cup-final appearance at Boundary Park thanks to a 4-2 win over Westwood, from division one.

The premier division title race is hotting up after leaders Royton FC suffered their third defeat of the season.

They were beaten 2-1 by Failsworth Athletic, for whom Gary Eyre grabbed both goals.

Lowerhouse United, in second place, lost 2-0 to High Crompton CC but Failsworth Dynamos, who boast five matches in hand over Royton FC, edged out Avro under-19s 1-0.

Chaddy End FC also moved into the reckoning after a 5-0 victory over Hunt Lane on Tuesday night.

With Khartoum Northern in Challenge Cup action, FC Broadgate stretched their lead at the top of division one to six points thanks to a 6-0 triumph at home to Parkside.

Promotion hopefuls Rose of Lancaster were held to a 2-2 draw by Wellington, while Royton Athletic climbed into mid-table after a 3-1 defeat of Crompton and Royton.

Steven Caine FC and Limeside Athletic are locked together at the top of division two.

The top two met last week when Caine emerged victorious, but they were unable to build on that win as they went down 1-0 to Old Grey Mare.

Athletic bounced back in style, sweeping aside Oldham United 9-3.

Rifle Range Royal Blues, who are chasing hard in third place, overcame Northside 5-3, while North Star and Royton Cons fought out a 1-1 draw.

Dunkerley sets the ball rolling

SANTOS recorded a confidence-boosting 2-0 victory over in-form Tintwistle Athletic in the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Rhodes Cup competition.

The hosts, who were without a win since the end of January, made a dream start when full-back Ian Dunkerley headed home a Jonathan Phillips cross.

Tintwistle gradually worked their way back into the tie, but Santos were always dangerous going forward and increased their advantage courtesy of Danny Hicks, who capitalised on a mix-up between the ’keeper and a defender.

Robert Tagg preserved Santos’ two-goal lead with a fine save, while chances fell to Hicks and Phillips, who were unable to apply the finishing touch.

Oldham Victoria’s Rhodes Cup quest was brought to an end by South Manchester, who ran out 6-0 winners.

In division two, AFC Oldham 2005 still have their sights set on a top-five finish after they swept aside Manchester Rovers 4-1.

Oldham Victoria’s reserves were too good for their AFC Oldham counterparts in division ‘C’ — they posted a decisive 5-1 win — and AFC Oldham thirds were beaten 2-1 by Old Ashtonians reserves in the Wray Cup.

Results are —

Rhodes Cup: Santos FC 2, Tintwistle Athletic 0; Oldham Victoria 0, South Manchester 6.

Division two: Manchester Rovers 1, AFC Oldham 2005 4.

Division ‘C’: AFC Oldham 2005 Res 1, Oldham Victoria Res 5.

Wray Cup: Old Ashtonians Res 2, AFC Oldham 2005 thirds 1.

Cup campaign over for Quins

HARLEQUIN bowed out of the AW Trippier Cup at the group stages after they went down 6-3 at Weavers Arms.

An entertaining first half saw the home side take the lead on three separate occasions, with Quins replying through Ash Lomas and Simon Butler.

Weavers added a fourth just after the break, but once again Harlequin roared back with a goal from winger Dave Wright.

Butler thought he had equalised when he volleyed home moments later, but it was disallowed for offside.

Quins tired late on, allowing Weavers to take their tally to six.

Dixon doubles up

STAND-IN skipper Matthew Dixon inspired Heyside Juniors under-15s to a 6-1 win at Rochdale St Clements in the Rochdale and Oldham Youth League on Tuesday night.

The central defender twice got on the end of free-kicks when the home side were well in the game, but further efforts from Joe Burlison (two) Ryan Atkin and Joe Bithell extended the margin of victory.

Elsewhere in the league, a hat-trick from James Tulley, plus other goals from Wes Williams and Harrison Grant, saw Chadderton FC Juniors under-12s to a 5-1 midweek win over Kingsway.

IN the Tameside and District Youth League, Heyside JFC under-11s suffered double disappointment as they lost 2-0 to Fletcher Moss and 3D Dynamos.

Christian shows way for Uppermill

UPPERMILL enjoyed their first win since December in the Huddersfield and District League.

They were ending a run of seven defeats and two draws as they overcame fellow premier division strugglers New Mill ’94 2-1 at Greenfield Paper Mill.

Scott Thistleton missed an early opening for Uppermill, who went behind against the run of play.

But they hit back to lead before the break thanks to a brace from Christian Neild.

The win puts Uppermill in good heart for Saturday’s local derby at home Diggle (kick-off 2.15pm).

Carl Winstanley was on the mark again for Heyside in division two — but he was unable to get near his eight-goal heroics of the previous week against Fenay Bridge.

The striker scored against Shelley, who were 3-0 up at half-time before going on to record a 5-2 victory.

Winstanley and Mick Topping reduced the deficit just after the restart, but Heyside’s fate was sealed when they gave away two soft goals.

Meanwhile, Diggle ‘A’ enjoyed a 3-0 win over local rivals Uppermill ‘A’ in reserve division two, while Heyside completed their league programme with a goalless draw at Wooldale.

Results are —

Division one: Diggle 1, Wooldale Wanderers 0; Uppermill 2, New Mill 94 1.

Division three: Heyside FC 2, Shelley 5.

Reserve division two: Diggle ‘A’ 3, Uppermill ‘A’ 0; Wooldale Wanderers Res 0, Heyside FC Res 0.

Dynamos looking to step up

FAILSWORTH Dynamos are setting their sights on a top-two finish in the Lancashire Amateur League premier division.

They defeated lowly Bury GSOB 2-1 in their latest clash to stay fourth in the table.

But Dynamos are only four points adrift of joint leaders Old Blackburnians and Old Boltonians, although Blackburnians are firm favourites for the title as they boast several games in hand over their nearest rivals.

Chaddertonians, who are one place below Dynamos in fifth, dominated the first half at home to 10-man Rossendale.

But they squandered a number of chances and paid the penalty when their opponents scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time.

In division two, Oldham Hulmeians saw their home fixture with bottom-of-the-table Ladybridge postponed after the visitors failed to raise a team, while Dynamos reserves were edged out 3-2 by their Bolton Wyresdale counterparts in division three.

Damian Hardman scored the all-important goal as Chadds ‘A’ defeated Hesketh ‘A’ 1-0 in division four.

And Hulmeians reserves took a giant step towards promotion from division six after they won 4-3 at third-placed Broughton Amateurs ‘A’. Elliot McKinnell and Danny Harrison scored two apiece as the local side consolidated second position with three games remaining.

In division seven, Tom Hartley netted Hulmeians ‘A’ team’s consolation in a 4-1 defeat against promotion-chasing Chadds ‘B’, who had Jack O’Dea (two), Jason Bowes and Warren Griffith on target.

Jonathan Hardisty’s effort was the only bright spot as Hulmeians ‘B’ went down 6-1 against Old Blackburnians ‘C’.

Results are —

Premier division: Chaddertonians 0, Rossendale Amateurs 1; Failsworth Dynamos 2, Bury GSOB 1.

Division one: Prairie United 1, Mostonians 3.

Division two: Oldham Hulmeians P Ladybridge P.

United target premier prize after upset

WARWICK United are through to the Ashton Sunday League premier division cup final — at the expense of high-flying Halfway House.

The last-four tie went to extra time and it was United, thanks to goals from Martin Chapman and Paul Dunks, who emerged as surprise 2-1 winners. Rocky Siddall replied.

The other semi-final clash, between Moston Labour Club and Bridge, takes place on Sunday.

In the division one cup, Dog and Partridge can look forward to the final after a narrow 3-2 defeat of Home Guard.

Mick Jones (two) and Ryan Rafferty (penalty) scored for Dog, who are two points clear at the top of the table. Sam Cooke and Mark Baines were Guard’s hot-shots.

In the premier division, Springbank secured their second success of the season at Moston Labour Club.

They won 3-0, with goals from K Shaw, A Moore and S Campbell.

Manor had Paul Hopwood (two) and Dale Cartledge on the mark in a 3-3 draw against Anglers in division one.

Liam Woods, Andrew Massey and Danny Jackson scored for Anglers, who remain bottom-of-the-table.

Paul Cuthbert’s hat-trick for Wellington was in vain as they slumped to a 6-3 defeat against Falconers, for whom A Clarke (two), R Brierley (two), D Schofield and S Milnes got the goals.

MOSTON Labour Club won the premier division section of the league’s five-a-side competition — they beat Bridge in the final — while Wellington overcame Charlestown to pick up the division one prize.
