Three tie for top spot

CROMPTON and Royton’s Invitation Day produced an exciting finish with three pairings tied on 44 points in the four-ball Stableford.
Winners were Andrew Simpson and Oldham’s Rick Sweet, second were John Haigh and Mike McCarthy while third were Andy Frizzell and Wayne Seed (Birchwood).
In fourth place with 42 points were Gary Melling and Ken Hardy.
WERNETH bowed out of the Manchester Alliance Foursomes as they were edged out 4-3 at Heaton Park in their preliminary-round match.
Ken Baker and Saul Slater (6 & 5), Mark Waring and Peter Hickey (4 & 3) were winners for Werneth while Tommy Dwayre and Shaun Rattigan’s half also counted as a victory as they were the away pairing.
But Werneth captain David Whaley and past captain David Whittingham progressed to the second round of the Daily Mail national foursomes with a 3 &1 win over Crompton and Royton pairing Kris Sutcliffe and Andy Frizzell.
Werneth’s four-ball betterball Stableford produced a victory for junior Jack Fallows and Les Dooley who amassed 47 points. Second were Mike Farrimond and Jack Suttie (46).
Jack Hulley was the winner of the seniors’ spring meeting scoring 42 points in the Stableford. Second was Mike Day (39).
Juniors Toby Jones (13) and Tom Woolley (14) came out top on a four-ball betterball Stableford at SADDLEWORTH scoring 46 points.
Runners-up were Alex Jeffery and Rick Eckersley (45pts) on the card from Mark Wild and Matt Woolley.
The top three places in OLDHAM’S four-ball betterball medal had to be determined on the card after the pairings each returned 58.
Ian Radcliffe and Mark Hayes emerged the victors, Dave Hewitt and Rick Fallon were runners-up while third place went to Geoff Proctor and Stuart Wagstaffe.
John Wheaton and Sam Gilbey headed the field in a four-ball betterball Stableford scoring 44 points.
Second were Peter Dowd and Tony Doidge (43) while third place went to Steve Mills and John Bramall (42).
Alan McQuaid and Paul Deighton needed a card play-off to edge out Brian Storey and Andy Fry for top spot in a four-ball betterball Stableford at BROOKDALE after both scored 42 points. Third were Mike Arnfield and Ian Thomas (41).
SHEILA Waterhouse headed the field in an 18-hole medal at WERNETH with a score of 98–28-70.
Fiona Dooley (76-5-71) claimed the first division sweep from Pat Grant (103-28-75). Tied for the second division sweep were Judith Wilkinson (112-33-79) and Dee Whittingham (113-34-79).
Werneth held another 18-hole medal and the runaway winner was Pat Grant (101-29-72). Runner-up was Jane Clark (90-13-77) while third place went to Dee Whittingham (112–34–78).
Jane Wild had a superb round, scoring 45 points to win a two-ball Stableford at SADDLEWORTH. Second was Julie Ward (41).
BROOKDALE’S 18-hole medal saw Angela Hunter (97-29-68) emerge the victor from second-placed Val Brogan (100-31-69).
