MOSSLEY were beaten 2–1 by Wakefield in their final home game of the season in UniBond League division one north.
The Lilywhites finished their Seel Park campaign on a disappointing note in this battle of mid-table teams.
Wakefield opened the scoring in the 36th minute through an unstoppable dipping volley by Adam Jones from outside the penalty area.
They were unlucky not to double their advantage early in the second period when James Dudgeon’s header struck the underside of the crossbar.
Mossley rode their luck and drew level in the 61st minute when Matty Kay was left unmarked and he fired past former Athletic keeper Andrew Woods.
Wakefield regained the lead in the 72nd minute through their second wonder goal of the game, a 25-yard volley from Paul Dempsey.
OLDHAM TOWN’S end-of-season collapse continued with a 5-1 defeat at Stone Dominoes in the first division of the Vodkat North West Counties League.
Town have blown their promotion hopes after winning only once in their last seven matches.
Their woes began early on when Tim Buxton limped off injured and that weakened their defence which cracked for the first time after 27 minutes when Mike Meszaros latched on to a ball over their defence to slot home.
They went two down on the stroke of half time when Town keeper Matty Blair beat out a shot only for Stuart Scheuber, following up, to convert.
Blair, injured against Chadderton on Easter Monday, was forced off at half time as 17-year-old Nathan Gibson took over in goal.
Jonny Phillips, James Curley and Darren Scanlan all had decent chances which could have clawed Town back into the game.
They failed to take them and Dominoes seized on this good fortune before sealing victory with three goals in a 10-minute spell from Anthony Marshall, Dan Brown and Niall Maguire, all which resulted from defensive mistakes.
Alex Dibley scored a consolation goal for Town, a shot from outside the box which bounced in front of the keeper and bounced over his body.
CHADDERTON are in action tonight as they play hosts to promotion-chasing Padiham in the first division of the Vodkat NWCL.
The mid-table Broadway side recently walloped high-flying Wigan Robin Park 4-0 which is proof they will be dangerous opponents.
If fourth-placed Padiham win their two games in hand, they will move into the second automatic promotion spot.
