RED STAR 2, COPPICE UNITED 7
COPPICE United will go head to head with holders Chaddy End FC in an all-premier division final of the D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup at Boundary Park.
After a 7-2 defeat of Red Star in the last four, United secretary Yasser Farooq said: “We were good in the first 20 minutes and we put our chances away.
“We took our foot off the pedal at the start of the second half, but finished strongly.”
United were always favourites to make it to the league’s showpiece event against a side who hail from David Giblin division one.
Four goals up at the break, United were coasting, but were then hit by a two-goal burst from Red Star that left them looking a little nervous.
But United prevailed, with late strikes finally putting a seal on their success.
All credit to Red Star, who gave it a real go and who, arguably, didn’t deserve to lose by a five-goal margin.
Stacy McDonald, the Red Star secretary said: “They were much more up for it than us but they are a very good team.
“The season is not over for us. We have everything to play for as we can still get promoted.”

In a forerunner to next month’s Challenge Cup final, Coppice United overcame Chaddy End 4-2, while Lowerhouse United defeated Royton 3-1.

Victoria leave it too late
OLDHAM Victoria will finish sixth at best in division two of the Lancashire and Cheshire League.
With three games to go, they cannot catch the team immediately above them, AFC Oldham 2005.
But it has still been a decent season for Vics, who recorded a 3-0 win over Tintwistle Athletic last weekend.
Santos FC, who are third bottom, made high-flying Hattersley work hard for their 2-0 victory.
The home side defended stoutly in the first half to keep the title-hopefuls at bay.
Danny Hicks and John Bland went close for Santos after the break, but Hattersley finally made the breakthrough on the hour-mark, before adding a second.
In division ‘C’, Santos reserves secured a fine 3–0 win at home to their Parrswood Celtic counterparts.
Mick Kelly put Santos in front, before Warren Tansey doubled the lead after Dominic Rathmill had knocked the ball over the ’keeper’s head.
Rathmill did eventually get on the scoresheet with 20 minutes left on the clock.
The local derby between Oldham Victoria reserves and AFC Oldham reserves saw the latter emerge 3-2 winners, while AFC Oldham’s third team defeated Hooley Bridge Celtic thirds 3-0 in division ‘D’.

Lee McAllister’s side returned to winning ways with a 3-1 defeat of Atherton Town, Fletcher, Harrison and Byrne, with his first of the season, securing the points.
Springhead followed with a 2-1 win over Hindsford on Tuesday night.
The result saw them leapfrog Avro, who were held to a goalless draw at Stockport Georgians.

face tough task
HEYSIDE are doing their level best to stay in division three of the Huddersfield and District League.
But after news emerged that four teams will be relegated, their task has been made even harder.
Despite securing their third win on the trot — they swept aside fellow strugglers Dalton Crusaders 7-1 — they are six points from safety with four games to go.
Joe Mannion put Heyside in front, only for Crusaders to restore parity.
But that man Mannion proved unstoppable as he completed his hat-trick before half-time, and added a fourth after restart.
It was one-way traffic by this stage, with James Taylor, Joe Ryder and Marc Mitchell completing the tally.
In division one, Diggle wrapped their season with a thumping 8-0 win over Meltham but Uppermill, who have survived the drop, were beaten 5-1 by Newsome WMC.
Uppermill’s second string fared much better as they recorded a 3-1 victory over Berry Brow Liberal Club in reserve division one, while Diggle ‘A’ edged out Scholes 5–4 in reserve division two.
Hulmeians slip up again
OLDHAM Hulmeians let a two-goal lead slip for the second successive week as they drew 3-3 at Bury GSOB reserves in division two of the Lancashire Amateur League.
Clint Tate slotted in the first to give Hulmeians a half-time lead and he doubled the advantage with a header early in the second period.
Bury managed to level affairs only for Tate to complete his hat-trick with what looked like the winner. But the hosts had the last word as they scrambled in a late equaliser from a corner kick.
In division one, Chaddertonians followed up a 1-1 draw at Bolton Lads Club in midweek — Damian Hardman, on debut, got the goal — with a 2-0 defeat of Rochdale St Clements, who had won their previous six matches.
Chadds, with Antony Corlett and Steve Barrow on the mark, were always on top.
Failsworth Dynamos tasted success against Bolton Lads Club by a 4-2 scoreline.
In division two, Chadds reserves are on a high.
They reached the quarter-finals of the Second XI Cup after a Damian Green goal clinched a 1-0 win over Rossendale Amateurs.
And, in their last league match of the season, they overcame Horwich Victoria 3-2.
Two penalties by Lee Higginbottom and a late goal by manager Colin Harrop — he scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute — kept their hopes alive of avoiding relegation.
Chadds ‘A’ finished their division four campaign in style with an 8-3 success over Little Lever ‘B’, while Hulmeians reserves are a point away from promotion from division six after cruising past Thornleigh ‘A’ 5–0. Danny Proffitt bagged a hat-trick while Lee Johnstone weighed in with two.
Jack O’Dea, with a hat-trick, was the star of the show as Chadds ‘B’ brushed aside Rossendale ‘B’ 6-1 to reach the last four of the ‘B’ Team Cup.

Bridge stake claim
BRIDGE could have made a decisive move in the race for top honours in the Ashton Sunday League premier division.
They swept aside title rivals Halfway House to open up a three-point lead, although they have played a match more than their nearest challengers.
MIke King (two), Mick Fleming, Lee Cumpsty, Neil Walsh and Peter Cassell bagged the Bridge goals.
Moston Labour Club caused a surprise by beating Vic Marsden Trophy finalists Warwick United 4-2, thanks to Ben Diggett, Carl Harrison, Steve Flynn and an own goal.
In division one, championship hopefuls Home Guard suffered a setback as they went down 4-3 to Falconers.
Goals from John Guy (two) and Carl Atkinson were in vain, while a Rob Brierley doubled spearheaded Falconers’ reply.
The result leaves Guard a point ahead of Dog and Partridge, who have two games in hand.
