MARK HEFFRON: Still in the junior ABAs
THERE is no stopping local boxer Ronnie Heffron, who has won through to the national quarter-finals of the ABA championships.
The 18-year-old from Horsedge Street claimed the North-West title after recording an impressive victory against Tower Hill Boxing Club’s Steven Jennings.
Heffron, a member of the Great Britain Podium Squad for the 2012 Olympics, stopped Jennings in the third round of their bout at Everton Park Sports Centre, Liverpool.
“Jennings had had 70-odd bouts and never been stopped before which shows how well Ronnie did,” explained coach Ben Lancaster.
Heffron, a member of Lancaster’s Boarshaw club, was fighting in the 64kg light welterweight division.
He has won four bouts in the ABA’s and now has a busy schedule as the national quarter and semi- finals are held on successive days on May 1 and 2.
Heffron is the reigning junior ABA champion and Lancaster is confident he can capture the senior crown at the first attempt.
Younger brother Mark (17) could emulate Ronnie as he is through to the quarter-finals of the junior ABA’s in the same 64kg light-welterweight division. His next bout in the competition is on May 10.
