REIGNING ‘A’ Division champions Brookdale have been left stunned after the opening game of the new Oldham and District Golf League season.

John Uren’s side were whitewashed 8-0 by Stamford — even more of a shock as the defeat was on their own Woodhouses course where they have only lost once in four years.

It was a great start for new Stamford captain Steve Lennon, with wins for Stuart Fletcher and Andy Earlam (1up) and Guy Hall and Keith Coxon, James Woodcock and Chris Houfe, and Tony Cavanagh and Martin Dwyer all 2&1.

Denton got off to an equally impressive start when they hammered Werneth 8-0 at Garden Suburb.

Oldham were delighted to beat Dukinfield 7-1 with Phil Doherty and Steve Daubney (1 hole), Paul Pattinson and Paul Rainford (3&2) Paul Carruthers and Terry Kelly (5 &4) and a half for Lee Melia and Lee Blainey.

And last year’s basement team Saddleworth will have been pleased with their start, a 6-2 win at home to Ashton, thanks to wins for Nigel Cooper and Andy Dunster (4&3) and Colin Wood and John Lacey and Nick Marner and John Knight (both 2&1).

Brookdale’s ‘B’ team, also champions last season, won 5-3 away at Stamford with wins for Arthur Tattersall and Mike Arnside, and Paul Fry and Dave Harrison and a half for Gary and Graham Whittaker.

And Werneth pulled off a shock 5-3 win at Denton thanks to Pete Barrington and Les Jones and John Parnell and Ron Hallett (both 2&1) plus a half for Alan Goodall and David Whittingham.

Week 1 results — A Division: Brookdale 0, Stamford 8; Werneth 0, Denton 8’ Oldham 7, Dukinfield 1; Saddleworth 6, Ashton 2.

B Division: Stamford 3, Brookdale 5; Denton 3, Werneth 5; Dukinfield 8, Oldham 0; Ashton 8, Saddleworth 0.
