’Head are looking up

SPRINGHEAD are aiming for a top-two finish in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division.
A comprehensive midweek win over Rochdale Sacred Heart has lifted Lee McAllister’s side to within three points of second-placed Walshaw Sports.
But Springhead, who still retain an outside chance of winning the title, have two games in hand.
Paul Stevenson, Richard Bennett, Dale Jackman and Charlie Lees were on target against Heart.
It was an afternoon of ‘firsts’ at Ashfield Crescent when Springhead produced a superb display to defeat East Manchester 4-0.
It was the first time ’Head had defeated East Manchester under the current management team of McAllister and Andy Revill, while Joe Cunningham and Rik Wild scored for the first time this season. In fact it was Cunningham’s first goal in more than four years.
The home side went ahead in the fourth minute when Cunningham fired home after Lees’ shot had come back off a post.
Springhead had to wait until the 67th minute for number two, and it was that man Cunningham, who beat his marker before unleashing an unstoppable drive.
Stevenson added a third courtesy of a cool finish, and it was left to Wild to head home number four from great Ryan Shaughnessy delivery.
Royton Town’s recent good run came to an end when they went down 2-1 at home to Wythenshawe Amateurs.
Behind in the 10th-minute — the goal stemmed from a corner which the hosts thought should have been a goal-kick — they slipped further adrift moments later when the Town defence stopped for an offside flag which never materialised.
Town were much better in the second half and played some superb passing football.
And they were thrown a lifeline when Andy Eastwood, who had been on the park a matter of seconds, reduced the deficit.
More chances fell Town’s way, but they were unable to force an equaliser.
Hollinwood, who slipped to fourth place after Springhead’s win on Tuesday night, held champions-elect Gregorians to a 2-2 draw. Gregorians need four points from four games to take the title.
Avro, meanwhile, enjoyed a cosy 3-0 win at Leigh Athletic.
