Saddleworth League round-up
GREENFIELD have hit the ground running in the Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
Jonathon Ainley’s side followed up their five-wicket success over Hollinwood on the opening day of the season with an equally comprehensive 82-run win at home to Droylsden.
Peter Gill, the elder statesman of the XI, was again to the fore. He took his wickets tally to 12 in two games after he claimed seven for 57.
Gill’s exploits restricted Droylsden to 203 all out, in reply to Greenfield’s daunting 285 for six from 45 overs.
Chris Moore hit a superb 113, while Peter’s son, Chris, struck 78 and Adam Hayes made 51.
Droylsden captain Michael Schofield was dismissed six short of a century and new signing Charlie Hodge compiled 60 in the run chase.
The duel between last season’s top two ended in an emphatic 145-run victory for reigning champions Bamford Fieldhouse at Heyside.
Bamford captain-for-the-day Paddy McKeown — Andy Barton was watching — led the way with 92 and former Heyside professional Mel Austin made 49.
Liam Garnett, with five for 35, and Darren Shadford (four for 41), did the damage with the ball as Heyside slumped to 98 all out.
Austerlands made it two wins out of two as they beat Uppermill, bowled out for 141, by five wickets.
Will Dornan top-scored for ’Mill with 52, while Dave Oldfield’s seamers yielded four for 28.
Peter Skuse was also among the wickets, the Australian pro taking six for 18 in Saddleworth’s eight-wicket defeat of Glodwick.
Mohammed Shazad picked up six for 72 for Hollinwood, who bounced back after last week’s debacle at Greenfield — they crashed to 77 all out — with a seven-wicket win at Moorside.
Mudassar Butt made an unbeaten 70 for ’Wood after paid man JP Lee had held the home side’s innings together with 81.
Friarmere, spearheaded by Darren Graham’s 63 not out, cruised to an eight-wicket success over Shaw at Holebottom Clough.
Skipper Rick Harrington top-scored with 44 in the hosts’ total of 129. Promising teenage leg-spinner Ben Ingham took three for 14.
