STAMFORD kept their place at the head of the Oldham and District Golf League ‘A’ division, despite going down 5-3 at Oldham.
Barry Sidebottom and Guy Hall (2&1) got a win for Stamford with Ian Grimsditch and Chris House halving their game with Paul Rainford and Sean Dixon while the home side’s successes came from Lee Blainey and Lee Melia (1 hole) and Paul Pattinson and Norman Radcliffe (2&1).
Leading the chasers two back — the next five teams are only separated by three points — are Dukinfield who whitewashed basement side Werneth 8-0 with wins for Darren Whiteley and Gary Beresford (6&5), Rob Fawcett and John Harrop (2&1), Barrie Lees and Chris Bamber (2&1) and Graeme Barrett and Mike Ferguson (5&3).
Denton will have been delighted with a 4-4 draw at Ashton to stay in the mix while just off the chasing pack are Brookdale who made it back-to-back 6-2 wins with a home success over Saddleworth.
They had successes for Mark Riley and John Hughes (2 holes), Gary Lever and Gary Smith (7&6) and Brad Keeling and Steve Boyle (5&3) while Colin Wood and John Lacey Won 2&1 for the visitors.
In the ‘B’ Division, Werneth’s stay at the top was brief, beaten 6-2 at home by Dukinfield, who take over at the head of affairs, with only Tommy Dwayre and Steve Dyson (4&3) able to stem the tide.
Brookdale were lifted by a 5-3 away win at Saddleworth with points coming from Dave Harrison and Mike Arnfield, Tony Burgin and Keith
Loftus and a half for Gary and Graham Whittaker against Frank Pullen and Sean Bradley.
John Walsh and Dave Newman won on the last green to cut the deficit.
Stamford’s 7-1 home success over Oldham came through wins for
Neil Pragnall and Gary Davies (7&5), Chris Akers and Dan Rice (5&3), Tony McClusky and Terry Merson (2 holes) and a half for Keith Walker and John Grainger against Stan Ganley and Pete Sparks.
