Garrett picks up President’s prize

TERRY GARRETT was in major mode, winning the President’s Prize at OLDHAM.

Three shots adrift of the three leaders after the first round of the 36-hole event, Garrett produced a second round of 70-7-63 to snatch victory by one stroke.

That added to his first-round 74-7-67 for a two-round total of 130, which was one shot clear of Rick Fallon.

Fallon followed his initial 72-4-68 with 67-4-63 for 131 while third place went to Steven Squires with 74-6-68 and 70-6-64 for 132.

Fallon took second round honours on the card from Garrett after both returned nett 63. Third was Mick Ganley (76-12-64).

Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were Damian Chadwick and John Bramall with 44 points.

Runners-up were Dave Ganley and Barry Cotton (43pts) on the card from Eric Charles and Dave Bruce.

An 18-hole play-off between Richard Flynn and Jason Webster will determine the destiny of the Seven Cup, a major at CROMPTON AND ROYTON.

Flynn had a round of 82-13-69 while the return of Webster was 76-7-69.

One shot behind were Chris Roberts (84-14-70), Dion Norbury (76-6-70), Robert Calow (76-6-70), Bradley Cannings (79-9-70) and Bernard Brame (77-7-70).

Andy Frizzell edged out Andy Allen on the card for top spot in a singles Stableford after both returned 37 points. Third was James Frizzell (33).

Liam McMarshall was the runaway winner of a junior medal with a score of 87-30-57.

Runner-up was James-Paul Booth (107-44-63) while third place went to Matthew Schofield (88-23-65).

BROOKDALE’S Jubilee Trophy, a major, saw Peter Thornley and Mark Riley triumph in the four-ball betterball Stableford with 44 points.

Runners-up were Mike Taylor and Peter Buckley (43) while third place went to John Peace and Chris Boyle (42) on the card from Adam Stott and Brian Foster.

SADDLEWORTH’S Am-Am, a medal competition, was won by Alan Entwistle and Nigel Cooper with a nett 62.

Runners-up were Andy Long and Nick Kerin (63) while third were brothers Ian and David Charnock (66) on the card from Dave Fox and Ian Buckley.

Keith Nield took the honours in the second qualifier for the President’s Prize at BLACKLEY.

He had a round of 77-10-67 to triumph on the card from Chris Slattery (78-11-67).

Third place went to Alan Ashworth (88-20-68) on the card from Lawrence O’Toole (83-15-68).

Saddleworth’s youngsters are at home to Fairfield on Sunday as they continue the defence of their Manchester Alliance BMW Junior Challenge.

WERNETH’S qualifier for the Chronicle Cup was won by Dave Jones (82-20-62) from second-placed Jack Suttie (69-5-64).

Kevin Duffy and Steve Henshall were the victors in a two man aggregate Stableford at STAMFORD.

They scored 72 points which was the same return as runners-up Tony and Kevin Brown.




OLDHAM Athletic’s Spring Golf Classic produced victory for a team representing club sponsors Leesfield Developments.



Tony Doidge, Brian Howarth, Dennis Wright and Eddy Benedek amassed 87 points in the team Stableford at Manchester Hopwood.

They finished three clear of Shield Conservatories who were represented by Steve Judge, Chris Hamer, Tony France and Peter Moore.
