SHEILA DANIELS’ victory in an EGWA medal at BROOKDALE was a triumph over adversity.
It was the first win achieved by the 77-year-old from Failsworth in a singles competition since she suffered a badly broken leg in 1998.
The leg injury sustained by Sheila after a fall from a pair of step ladders was so severe that she was told she may never walk again.
“It was a slow process recovering but I was determined I was not going to be beaten and I wanted to be able to play golf again,” said Sheila, who was in hospital for five months and out of action for over two years.
Sheila, who has had her own buggy since 2002, has won several pairs and team events, but viewed her singles success as a significant moment.
“My handicap has increased to 28 - it was 12 back in 1998 - but it was a special to win this competition,” she said.
Sheila and husband Ray are both honorary life members at Brookdale, something bestowed on them because of their service to the club.
Sheila’s score in the EGWA medal was 103-28-75 as she finished one shot clear of Angela Sloan (87-11-66).
Angela went one better by winning the Ping four-ball betterball qualifier as she and Sue Whitaker totalled 38 points in the Stableford.
Runners-up were Diane Williams and Iona Clarke (36) while third place went to Marie Greaves and Sheila Daniels (34).
The Lucy Smith Plate, which also doubled up as the Lady Vice-Captain’s Prize at CROMPTON AND ROYTON, was won by Maureen Delaney who scored 34 points in the Stableford.
Noreen Nicholson (33) was runner-up while third place went to Marjorie Bray (30).
Mrs Clegg’s Trophy at SADDLEWORTH produced a win for Eileen Simpson (99-28-71), on the card from Jean Dervan (93-22-71).
Brenda Martin claimed top spot in an EWGA medal at WERNETH after a round of 99-26-73.
Pat Grant (112-28-84) took the first division sweep while Glynis Jones (113-36-77) captured the sweep in division two.
OLDHAM drew 3.5-3.5 at Crompton and Royton in their Shield match. The Oldham winners were Karen Phanco (1up), Marjorie Bray (5 &3) and Edythe Turner (4 & 3) while Janet Kershaw halved her match.
