WERNETH ‘A’ broke their Oldham Golf League duck for the season in style, beating last season’s champions Brookdale 8-0.
It’s proving a tough defence for the Woodhouses men as this was their second whitewash in four games and sees them in the strange position of second bottom.
Werneth’s success was brought about by wins for Mark Abbott and Steve McNamara (6&5), James and Adie Buckley (3&1), Adam Rowbotham and Jonathan Wilde (2&1) and Les and Jonathan Dooley (2 holes).
Saddleworth took a healthy six points at home to Oldham through Nick Marner and Martin Heap (4&2), Tad Knebel and John Lacey (3&2) and Gary Simpson and Cliff Bird (5&4) with Lee Melia and Lee Blainey claiming Oldham’s sole success.
Stamford are four points clear at the top after a 7-1 home win over Ashton.
Brookdale ‘B’ reversed their ‘A’ teams result by beating Werneth 8-0 with wins for Keith Loftus and Tony Bergin, Barry Hayes and John Strachan and Dave Harrison and Mike Arnfield (all 4&2) and Gary and Graham Whittaker (3&2).
Saddleworth ‘B’ grabbed a precious away win 5-3 at winless Oldham, the visitors’ winners being Frank Pullen and debutant Dave Taylor,
Glyn Dixon and rookie Duncan Midgeley and a half coming from the reliable Steve Wild and Denis Lamb against Stan Ganley and Owen Williams.
Stuart Hanson and Alex Simmons (3&2) got the other home-side points.
ONLY two players in the league hold 100 per cent records after the first month in the race for the individual award - Guy Hall (Stamford) in the ‘A’ Division and Dukinfield’s Colin O’Connor in the ‘B’ Division.
Week 4 results —
‘A’ Division: Stamford 7, Ashton 1; Saddleworth 6, Oldham 2; Denton 6, Dukinfield 2; Werneth 8, Brookdale 0.
‘B’ Division: Ashton 4, Stamford 4; Oldham 4, Saddleworth 5; Dukinfield 6, Denton 2; Brookdale 8, Werneth 0.
