Booth bags first major of season

STAMFORD’S first major of the season saw Alan Booth win the Cheetham Cup after recording a nett 66 to edge out Kevin Duffy on the card.
Duffy and Dave Batty shared the prize for the best-gross score with 74 while Tom Howe scored a hole-in-one at the 18th.
The charity open, which raised funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Society, saw father and son Terry and Matt Merson triumph in the four-ball betterball Stableford.
The amassed 44 points to win on the card from Ian Grimsditch and Steve Lennon.
CROMPTON AND ROYTON easily defeated Skipton 4.5-0.5 at home in the Mail on Sunday Team Classic.
The local winners were David Brooks (4 & 2), Mark Barrett (2 up), Andy Frizzell (4 & 2) and Kris Sutcliffe (5 & 4) while Steven Barrett halved his match.
Gary Melling, Andy Simpson, James Frizzell and Scott O’Leary triumphed in a four-man team medal with a score of 126.
They finished four shots clear of runners-up Trevor Lockwood, Malcolm Burton, Robert Jackson and Geoff Matthews.
Mark Barrett headed the field in the first division of a medal with a score of 75-5-70. Second was Gary Melling (76-4-72) on the card from Andy Allan (76-4-72).
Heading the second division was Steve Oldham (82-11-71) from Andrew Bottomley (86-14-72) and Jimmy Frizzell (89-15-74) who claimed third place on the card from Derek Cannon (84-10-74).
Brian Stanton (89-19-70) edged out Doug Kenyon (87-17-70) on the card for top spot in division three. Third was Ian Whittaker (87-16-71) on the card from Gordon Lamb (88-17-71).
Mike Shephard’s round of 80-16-64 won him the Sid Jones Cup, a major at BROOKDALE.
Runner-up was captain Lewis Marland (77-12-65) while third place went to Peter McQuilliam (81-15-66). Fourth was Steve Boyle (71-4-67).
Barry Hayes claimed top spot in the first division of the second Captain’s Qualifier after a return of 77-10-67.
Jim Ashelby (76-8-68) was runner-up while third place went to Peter Buckley (70-1-69) on the card from Peter Walker (79-10-69).
Phil Budd (87-19-68) took honours in division two from Ray Deacon (86-17-69). Third was Keith Power (91-21-70) on the card from Dave Welch (89-19-70).
WERNETH’S monthly medal saw John Barlow (75-12-63) take top spot in division one on the card from Dale Hobson (76-13-63).
Dave Wright (76-15-61) claimed the honours in division two on the card from Mike Cocker (79-18-61).
Winner of a medalford, a part medal, part Stableford competition, was Paul Durkin from second-placed Geoff Hibbert.
OLDHAM’S Invitation Day was won by Andy Hulme and D Horsan with 43 points in the four-ball Stableford.
Runners-up were Mike Allen and W Wright (42pts) on the card from Alan Squires and H Mahon. Fourth were Dave Kay and I Lowe (41).
Lee Blainey and Graham Pendleton triumphed in a four-ball betterball medal with a score of 60.
Second were Alan Squires and Mark Statham (61) on the card from Dave Ganley and Mick Jones.
Roy Dobson and Steve Taylor will represent SADDLEWORTH in the International Pairs after winning the club qualifier.
They scored 42 points in the four-ball betterball Stableford to edge out Chris and Michael Lakner (41) who were runners-up on the card from Stan Kenyon and Dave Chapman.
Holders Saddleworth defeated Fairfield 5-2 at home in the second round of the BMW Junior Challenge.
Jack Shaw, Matthew Woolley, Ben Simpson and Rick Scholes were winners while Stephen Pullen and Mark Anderson-Wild halved their matches.
