Hat-trick for Elcock in league opener

OLDHAM & Royton Harriers’ young athletes finished fourth in the first match of the track and field league at Leigh.
Mary Elcock lead the way in the under-15 girls’ events with wins in the 200m ‘B’ race in 29.2 seconds, the high jump with 1.35 metres and the ‘B’ discus with a throw of 12.82m.
Bobbie-Leigh Tindall also had a good day, winning the 200m ‘A’ race in 28.7s and the ‘A’ discus with 14.26m.
Heather Moran won the under-15s 100m ‘A’ race in 13.6s and Rachael Birchall won the 100m ‘B’ race in 14.5s, while Emily Tudbury won the ‘B’ 75m hurdles race in 16.7s.
In the 4x100m relay, the team of Elcock, Moran, Birchall and Tindall won in 55.3s.
In the boys events, Christopher Brown came first in the under-13s 800m in 2 minutes 38.2 seconds, while Bradley Szakacs had a great day, winning the under-17s 200m in 24.5s and the long jump in 5.04m.
Connor Colleavey won the under-13s ‘B’ long jump with 3.18m, while Adam Howard won the under-15s 1500m in 4:43.0 and the long jump with 4.20m.
On the road, five of the club’s runner competed in the BUPA Great Manchester Run 10k, with Mike Smith leading them home in 42:00, closely followed by his dad, Karl, in a new personal best of 42:16.
Mike Baron ran well for 49:45, followed by Mark Whittenbury 52:48 and Nigel Whitworth 66:58.
Thirteen young Harriers athletes took part in the Junior Great Manchester Run, and were led home by Christopher Brown.
He had brilliant run to finish second in the nine to 11-year-old boys’ race in 8:25, followed by Joseph Kershaw who was 104th in 10:49.
Lewis Adamajitis also ran well in 109th place in 10:52, while Thomas Taylor was 163rd in 11:26.
In the nine to 11-year-old girls’ race, Rachel Emmott was 24th in 10:19 with Jessica Gregson 25th in 10:20, Megan Whitworth 56th in 11:22 and Emma Taylor 216th in 14:49.
In the 12 to 14-year-old girls race, Sarah Whitworth was 29th in 10:09 and Lucy Kershaw 61st in 11:16.
Robert Smith was 14th in the 12 to 14-year-old boys’ race in 8:32, followed by Connor Colleavey 20th in 8:56.
