HEYSIDE, the holders, suffered a first-round exit in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s Tanner Cup — but they pushed Bamford Fieldhouse all the way at Hollin Lane yesterday.

In a re-run of the 2008 final, Mark Barnes’ battlers succumbed by two wickets.

Heyside appeared down and out at the half-way stage — they were bowled out for 115 in the last over — but they made Bamford struggle for every run as they tried to repeat their heroics of that September day.

And it could have been so different if Tony Heaton hadn’t spilled number 10 Qasar Riaz with 12 runs still required.

Once again Nick Campbell provided the backbone to Heyside’s batting. The man-of-the-match when these two teams met in last season’s final, he held the innings together with a gritty 43 in tricky conditions and added 26 vital runs with last-man Carl Newton (11 not out).

Only one other player reached double figures — professional Roelof Hugo made 26 — as the Bamford bowling attack took a firm grip on proceedings.

Darren Shadford was the pick of the bowlers — he weighed in with three for 23 — while there were also two wickets apiece for Mel Austin, Stephen Parry and Riaz.

Parry was Lancashire’s 12th man in their win over Essex in the Friends Provident Trophy 24 hours earlier. Here, the young left-arm spinner was busy keeping Heyside in check.

Parry was unable to make any impression with the bat, He was bowled by Chris van Schalkwyk for a duck, moments after the South African overseas amateur had lured Dave Roberts into lobbing a shot straight to Barnes for eight.

Those wickets in the same over left Bamford 79 for five after they were cruising at 66 for one.

Roberts had lived a charmed life. He had already been dropped by Heaton, sparking a comment or two directed towards the fielder from the boundary edge. A quiet word from the umpires nipped the situation in the bud.

Van Schalkwyk impressed with three for 12 from eight overs — he also claimed the wicket of Shadford for 27 — while Stuart Moore bowled West Indian Lincoln Roberts in figures of two for 23.

Carl Newton grabbed two late wickets as Heyside closed in on an improbable victory but Austin, playing against the club for whom he served 11 years, kept a cool head to see Bamford home with an unbeaten 15 in the penultimate over.

Bamford entertain Greenfield in round two after Jonathan Ainley’s side overcame Austerlands by 32 runs at Thorpe Lane.

Saddleworth brought Shaw’s three-match winning run to an end at Well-i-Hole.

Peter Skuse just missed out on a century — he hit 98 — and Chris Brazewell compiled a fine 53 in the hosts’ total of 239 for five.

Shaw, in reply, were dismissed for 119 as Saddleworth booked a home clash against Hollinwood on Sunday, June 21.

Ben Johnson and Steven Downend struck 53 and 51 not out respectively for Stayley, who proved too strong for Droylsden.

Oram Simms chipped in with 49 as the Millbrook outfit accumulated 218 for nine from their 45 overs.

Droylsden were bowled for 123, leaving Stayley to face Uppermill in the next stage of the knock-out competition.

Uppermill restricted Moorside to 167 for nine at Turf Pit Lane, before achieving their goal with seven wickets to spare. Michael Brooks was unbeaten on 57.

The other tie in round two will see Glodwick entertain Friarmere after both sides received a bye.Scores are —
