Woolley and McDermott lift pairs trophy

SPRINGBANK’S Geoff Woolley and Wilf McDermott teamed up to win the Saddleworth Bowling League’s Dunphy pairs competition.

They defeated the Chadderton Cot father and son team of Jeff and Colin Lane 21-18 in the final played at Springhead.

The competition attracted 62 pairs and the winners received £140.


NIMBLE Nook’s Jimmy Derby landed the £320 top prize in the inaugural Prestwich BC Open when he demolished Robbie Fitzpatrick (West Kirby Vics) 21-7 in the final.

Earlier, Derby defeated Swinton’s David Walker 21-7 and Tottington’s Ian Turrell 21-15.

Derby was out of luck, however, in the qualifying rounds of the £1,550 J W Lees Classic at Hopwood Unionist Club, Heywood.

Beaten finalist last year, Derby lost 21-18 in the first round to Andy Mailer (Sheffield).

Derby’s Nook team-mate Darren Griffiths was in better form.

Griffiths defeated James Hanson (Pudsey) 21-13 and followed up with a 21–10 dismissal of Chris Hill (Sheffield).

Matt Gillies, a third Nimble Nook player in action at Hopwood, lost 21-17 to Charlie Bebbington (Warrington).

Bebbington qualified for the finals with a 21-17 verdict against Paul Dudley (Radcliffe), but Mailer lost 21-13 to Hyde teenager Jack Hargreaves.

Jack’s father, Steve, was the night’s other qualifier, beating Kevin Wainwright (Warrington) 21-18.


THREE-times Oldham Evening Chronicle Handicap champion Peter Craig teamed up with top female player Karen Johnstone to win the Brennan mixed pairs at Norden BC.
Craig and Johnstone beat Bob Forster and Jean Beaumont (Norden) 21-16 in the final.

Chadderton’s Paul Heap and F McDermott lost 21-13 to Craig and Johnstone in the quarter-finals.
