Play-off to decide Centenary winner

STEVE OLDHAM and Andrew Bottomley must go head-to-head in an 18 hole play-off to decide the Centenary Trophy at CROMPTON AND ROYTON.

Oldham had a round of 75-10-65 and Bottomley 79-14-65 which ensured the major was not settled on the day.

Third was Brent Cannings (75-9-66) while fourth place went to Chris King (78-11-67).

Jack Bottomley-Clift emerged the victor in the junior medal after a round of 78-7-71.

Runner-up was Adam Rathbone (98-25-73), third was Matthew Barlow (96-20-76) and fourth place went to James Frizzell (86-5-81).

OLDHAM savoured knockout glory winning through to the second round of both the Dunham Forest Trophy and Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes.

They defeated Northenden 6-1 at home in the Dunham with victories secured by professional James Rowlands (1up), Alan Squires (2up), Rick Fallon (4 & 3), Lee Blainey (6 & 5), Dave Hewitt (1up) and Rick Sweet (3 & 2).

It was far closer in the Archie Preston where Oldham defeated edged past neighbours Brookdale 4-3 at home through Alan Squires and Jackie Lees (3 & 2), Terry Kelly and Joyce Beech (5 & 4), Lee Hollin and Lynn Kershaw (20th), David Bailey and Jane Antrobus (2 & 1).

Brookdale’s three winning pairs were Brad Keeling and Vicky Akin, Lewis Marland and Sue Boothby, Paul Cain and Margaret Coleman.

Oldham’s cup final four-man team Stableford produced a win for Fred Griffin, Harold McGuiness, Sam Lunt and Mike Griffin who scored 92 points.

Runners-up were the Radcliffe’s, Norman snr and jnr, Ian and Mark Radcliffe (90pts) on the card from Rick Fallon, Paul Butler, Tony Caveney and Cliff Butler.

Sam Lunt scored 39 points to claim top spot in the first division of a Stableford from Sean Dixon (35) who was second on the card from Lee Melia.

Dave Green headed division two with 35 points from Gordon Tilzey (33) and Chris Bramall (32).

Matthew Chapman claimed the first division prize in the third qualifier for the Captain’s Prize at BROOKDALE with a score of 76-9-67.

Runner-up was Paul Wood (75-7-68) on the card from Sam Carroll (75-7-68) and Arthur Tattersall (79-11-68).

Craig McCannon (77-14-63) headed division two from Steve Sharples (84-19-65), Joe Loughman (80-14-66) and Chris Boyle (80-13-67).

Winner of a singles Stableford was Barry Wiltshire (39pts) on the card from Paul Tunstall. The next two finishers were Jim Ashelby (38) and Keith Miller (37).

WERNETH’S first qualifier for the Fairway Cup was won by Kurt Helme (77-15-62) from second-placed Peter Davies (69-6-63).

Ian Hartley triumphed in an all-irons Stableford scoring 35 points. Second was Tim Joyce (34).

John Strickland took top spot in a singles Stableford at STAMFORD on the card from James Woodcock after both scored 43 points.

MANCHESTER Airport Golf Society is staging its 19th annual ChildFlight Golf Classic at Brookdale on Friday, July 10.

The cost is £120 for a team of four which includes which includes food and entry into a prize draw.

SADDLEWORTH’S Tad Knebel defends his men’s Chronicle Cup at Brookdale on Saturday.

Knebel, who was the victor 12 months ago after shooting a nett 64, tees off his round at 11.20pm in a three-ball which also comprises home player John Uren and Oldham’s John Baines.
