WARRICK FYNN responded to his skipper’s urgings to inspire Shaw to a derby-day success in the Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League yesterday.

Captain Rick Harrington instructed the South African professional to knuckle down after an indifferent start to the season with the bat — and he replied with an unbeaten 90 at home to Heyside.

Fynn’s previous best was 61, but he dug in to steer his side to a three-wicket win.

The 24-year-old also played his part with the ball, claiming four for 32 to help restrict Heyside to 147 all out.

Shaw sit fifth, one place above Glodwick, who overcame Hollinwood by 19 runs at Warren Lane.

The hosts’ total of 218 — it was their biggest score of the season — included 71 from Pakistani paid man Imran Aslam.

Hollinwood were restricted to 199 for eight in reply.

The other fixture played to a finish saw Uppermill record a seven-wicket victory over Friarmere at West View.

Last year’s leading amateur batsmen, Zeeshan Khan and Zafar Iqbal, displayed their obvious talents, but it was home-grown talent Michael Brooks who was the star with the ball.

The Uppermill player took six for 28 as Friarmere, with Iqbal compiling 61, made 147 for nine.

It was then Khan’s turn to take his place in the spotlight, and he struck an excellent 101 not out to lift the visitors past the winning the post.

Glen McFadyean took his tally of wickets for the weekend to 10 — see main story — with five for 56 in the reverse fixture at home to Austerlands.

However, the seamer’s efforts were in vain as the match ended in a draw.

Austerlands, looking to bounce back after Saturday’s poor performance, settled on 171 for nine.

But play was held up for an hour — it rained after one over — which left Moorside in a race against the clock to reach their target.

And time ran out for Francis Sutherland’s side, who were 137 for four with 15 overs to go when the stumps were drawn.

Lou Adair struck his second consecutive century, but it was no avail as rain wrecked Stayley’s victory push against Droylsden at Millbrook.

He hit an unbeaten 116 — he scored 106 against Hollinwood six days earlier — and Oram Simms made an excellent 96 out of a total of 231 for one declared.

Droylsden were in deep trouble at 43 for six when the heavens opened.
