Women’s golf

LINDA NEWMAN drove her way to glory in Lady Captain’s Prize at Saddleworth.

In the 36-hole major, she had a two-round return of 199-56-143 to finish one shot ahead of Kath Whitehead (198-54-144).

The first-day prize went to Kathy Scott (88-19-69) and second-round honours to Dawn White (86-14-72).

Saddleworth’s EGWA No 4, a medal competition, was won by Julie Ward (98-23-75) who had a six shot margin of victory over Pam Taylor (105-24-81).

A nine hole subsidiary, held as part of the medal, saw Joyce Bradley triumph with 16 points on the card from Sheila Cooper.

Mary Buckley captured the Centenary Trophy at OLDHAM with a score of 167-29-138 in the 36-hole major.

Liz Johnson (82-15-67) won the first-day prize while honours in the second went to Linda Hall (86-21-65).

The President’s Prize, also a major, saw Liz Johnson continue her impressive form as she triumphed with a score of 36 points in the 18-hole Stableford.

Runner-up was Lynn Kershaw (34pts) on the card from Linda Hall and Linda Newman. Edythe Turner (33) claimed the second sweep.

Oldham defeated Manchester Hopwood and Brookdale, both by 6-1 margins at home, in the Lancashire Handicap Shield.

The winners against Hopwood were Lynn Kershaw (2up), Janet Kershaw (7 & 6), Karen Phanco (2 up), Bev Mercer (1 up), Jane Antrobus (1 up) and Chris Peirson (5 & 4).

Sheila Antrobus (1up), Janet Kershaw (7 & 6), Mary Buckley (5 & 4) and Karen Phanco (3 & 2) were the victors against Brookdale as Oldham also had two walkover wins.

Mrs Bottoms Cup, an EWGA medal, at WERNETH was won by Glynis Jones with a score of 104-35-69.

Brenda Martin (97-26-71) took the first-division sweep from Heather Jeffries (92-18-74).

Dee Whittingham (112-34-78) took the honours in the second division from Judith Wilkinson (112-33-79).
