SIMON Wright hit a superb unbeaten 106 as Crompton put down a marker for next weekend’s Wood Cup quarter-final against Clifton.
In this dress rehearsal for the real thing at Glebe Street, Clifton must have thought they were huge favourites after hitting 242 for nine from their 50 overs,
Alex Rodzoch was their star man with 92, while Ichira Yahathugoda chipped in with 45. Crompton professional Mohammed Zaman Khan took five for 65.
In reply, Crompton made a majestic 243 for seven, Wright’s unbeaten century proving the decisive factor but Majid Khan’s 62 being almost as valuable.
ROYTON continued their terrific recent form with a comfortable six-wicket defeat of high-flying Littleborough at Hare Hill.
In-form Royton professional Luke Procter took six for 66 as the home side were skittled for 139 after taking first guard.
And Royton scored the runs they needed for the loss of only four wickets, with overseas amateur Ryan Carters’ hitting 41. Boro paid man Daryn Smit took four for 51.
WERNETH had an ideal opportunity to recover from their recent woes when they travelled to struggling Ashton.
But The Coppice outfit went down by two wickets, despite posting an impressive 219 for five. Alan Durose hit an unbeaten 80 and Mark Dronsfield 59 not out.
Ashton should not have been able to get near that total given their recent struggles, but they reached their target with a couple of wickets to spare thanks to Hamant Maisuria’s 49, David Gaskin’s 32 and an unbeaten 36 from Sajay Kadodia.
Saturday scores: Ashton 223-8 (Maisuria 49, Kadodia 36 n.o., Gaskin 32, Werneth 219-5 (Durose 80 n.o., M Dronsfield 59 n.o.); Crompton 243-7 (Si Wright 106 n.o., M Khan 62), Clifton 242-9 (Alex Rodzoch 92, I Yahathugoda 45, Z Khan 5-65); Oldham 134 (Makin 5-37), Norden 266-7 (Symes 79, H Fitton 41); Heywood 184-5 (Taylor 70, Blight 39, Pawson 37 n.o.), Milnrow 183 (Power 79, Purser 7-58); Littleborough 139 (Procter 6-66), Royton 141-4 (Carters 41, Smit 4-51); Monton and Weaste 250-5 (Green 112, Scott 34, Costa 32 n.o.), Unsworth 129 (Judge 30, Hamilton 5-25); Radcliffe 98 (Core 5-47, Highton 4-31), Middleton 186-6 (Fitton 48, Skewes 40); Rochdale 155-5 (Weeratne 42, Butterworth 37 n.o.), Walsden 150-9 (Gilford 47, Blake 39, Weeratne 3-35, Avery 3-41).
