Club has plenty to celebrate

Table tennis

OLDHAM Table Tennis Club have won two promotions in national competitions during a highly successful season.

They entered the Women’s British League for the first time and were crowned division three champions.

The team was Rebekah Griffith (16), Anna Dobrzanska (24), Kim Barnard (24) and Reena Ardeshana (17).

In their debut season in the National Cadet League, Oldham finished runners-up in division three to clinch promotion.

It was a great achievement, bearing in mind Oldham fielded the youngest squad in the under-15s league.

It comprised Abigail Griffith (nine), James Chappell (nine), Callum Allman (10), Paige Allman (13), Olenka Ostrowskyj-Jervis (13), Jacob Riley (13) and Matthew Kelly (13).

Jacob had the distinction of winning all his games during the league campaign.

Oldham also entered the National Junior League, an under-18s competition, for the first time.

They finished second bottom, though this was primarily because they were forced to play weakened teams.

However, the considerable cost of competing in national leagues was eased by funding received from the Grassroots Community Foundation.

Abigail Griffith, Nicole and Natalie Dodd and Joshua Boult were the Oldham Table Tennis Club members, who represented the North West in the regional championships.

Oldham Table Tennis Club are also forging links with a club in Poland and during a visit to that country Abigail Griffith won a junior girls’ tournament.

The local club has organised an open junior under-18 competition for boys and girls at Radclyffe Athletics Centre on Sunday, August 9. Funding for the tournament was secured from Awards For All.
