Kerin’s late bid pays off

NICK KERIN emerged from the pack to capture the Committee Cup at SADDLEWORTH.

Three shots adrift of first-round leader Stuart Potts, Kerin pulled back the deficit to defeat Dave Charnock on the card for top spot.

Kerin had rounds of 81-11-70 and 78-11-67 for 137, while Dave Charnock, who was third after the opening round, had 87-19-68 and 88-19-69.

In third place was Peter Collinge, who had rounds of 89-18-71 and 85-18-67 for 138.

The second-round winner was Steve Baron with a score of 78-13-65. Second was Mike Taylor (76-9-67) on the card from Collinge (85-18-67).

Holders Saddleworth defeated Blackburn club Wilpshire 5-2 at home to move into the quarter-finals of the BMW Junior Challenge.

The local winners were Matthew Woolley, Jack Shaw, Rick Scholes (both 5&4), Mark Anderson-Wild (19th) and Ben Simpson (1 up).

The unlucky losers were Jamie Heywood and Stephen Pullen, who both were beaten by England girls internationals.

President’s Prize at STAMFORD was won by David Batty with a score of 69-5-64.

The runner-up was Keith Coxon (73-7-66) on the card from Phil Nokes (84-18-66).

OLDHAM held the first and second rounds of Captain’s Prize with players to take their best score from either through to the final on July 11.

Mark Statham (69-7-62) headed the leaderboard in the first round from John Waterhouse (82-19-63), who was second on the card from Steve Daubney (70-7-63).

Matthew Radcliffe (74-12-62) took the honours in the second round from John Wheaton (77-13-64), who was next-best ahead of Colin Ingle (74-10-64).

The second round also produced cheer for Tony Caveney. He recorded a hole-in-one at the 16th Punchbowl.

BROOKDALE Vice-Captain’s Prize saw Matthew Hampson shoot a level-par gross 68 for a nett 62 and a two-shot margin of victory.

The runner-up was Brian Goddard (81-17-64) on the card from Brian King (80-16-64).

Peter Mawdsley was Brookdale’s golden oldie, winning the Veterans Trophy with a score of 92-26-66.

Second was Doug Jones (74-7-67) on the card from Brian Storey (80-13-67).

A subsidiary 18-hole Stableford, for under-55s, was won by Mike Taylor with 39 points on the card from Michael Owen and Dave Haynes.

Father and son Chris and Robert Calow took the honours in a greensome at CROMPTON AND ROYTON with a score of 70-7.6-62.4.

Runners-up were Peter Boggiano and Dave Whitworth (72-8.8-63.2), while third place went to Terry O’Connor and Bob Hopkinson (63.6) on the card from Doug Kenyon and Lee Spratt.

Winner of the first division in a medal was Tony Sutherland (78-12-66) from Jack Bottomley-Clift (74-7-67), Whitworth (78-10-68) and Bernard Brame (74-6-68).

Mark Power (86-18-68) claimed top spot in division two on the card from Jack Kenworthy (88-20-68).

Jordan Abbott produced the round of the weekend — 73-15-58 — to romp to victory in a junior medal from Ryan O’Leary (76-12-64).

Third place went to Matthew Toop (108-34-74) while fourth was Lewis Wood (105-30-75).

Chris Cordwell produced a second-round surge in the sunshine to claim the major Vice Captain’s Day prize at Werneth.

He followed up a 73-6-67 — he was five off the first round lead — with a six under 68-6-62 for a one-shot victory.

Adam Rowbotham shot (67+63=130) to be runner-up on a card play-off from David Griffiths (64+66=130), who shaved the hole with a birdie putt at the last which would have forced a play-off.

Andy Hey’s 74-12-62 took the opening round first division prize with Ian Hartley 76-12-64 claming the second-round honours.

A midweek three-ball Stableford was won by Les and Jonathan Dooley alongside Paul Handley with 85 points on a card play-off from Adam Rowbotham, Liam Dwayre and Terry Walsh.
