LOCAL boxer Shinny Bayaar has discovered that being granted a British passport opens previously closed doors in his sport.
Within days of becoming a British citizen after living here for eight years, Mongolian-born Bayaar has been granted a tilt at a title.
The British Boxing Board of Control has ordered that British flyweight champion Chris Edwards, of Stoke-on-Trent, must defend his crown against Bayaar, who is a member of Jack Doughty’s Shaw-based Tara stable.
Promoters have until later this week to make bids to stage the bout which will probably take place in the autumn.
Doughty, who trains and manages Bayaar, said his boxer had to live here for five years to become eligible to apply for British citizenship. He has since had to study and pass examinations.
But having finally been granted citizenship Bayaar, who is also a gym instructor in Sale where he lives, is now eligible to fight for British, European and Commonwealth titles.
