President’s salver win a real family affair

MOTHER-IN-LAW and son-in-law Brenda Bellis and Mike Sweeney provided a harmonious partnership as they lifted the President’s Salver at Crompton and Royton.
Bellis (C & R) and Sweeney (Worsley Marriott) had a score of 65.5 in the mixed foursomes.
Husband-and-wife Charlie and Andrea Lowe (C & R) were runners up with 67.5 while third place went to Oldham’s Martin Lewis and Linda Newman (68.5), on the card from home players John Osbaldeston and Kath Clinton.
Runaway winners of a team Stableford were Steve Ashurst, Charlie Lowe, Tim O’Brien and Ray Hornibrook who amassed 92 points.
Second were Ken Higginbottom, Colin Howarth, Mel Simms and John Brock who triumphed after a three-way card play-off.
Alex Givvons, Keith Ward, Dion Norbury and Danny Heap were third while fourth place went to Rob Coates, Brian Copeland, Dave Hopkins and Ray Anchor.
Andy Hirst (76-11-65) topped division one in a medal from Mike Heston (81-14-67) and Derek Cannon (77-10-67).
Eric Parker (82-15-67) finished first in the second division from Doug Kenyon (84-16-68).
Crompton and Royton’s Jordan Flint could not prevent Lancashire boys suffering a 10-8 defeat against Durham at Blackpool North Shore.
Flint and Hillside’s Zain Wild won their foursomes match, but Flint was beaten 3 & 1 in the singles by Bishop Auckland’s Sam Scott.
Mark Riley followed up his victory in the Oldham and District Championship by capturing the Millennium Trophy at BROOKDALE 24 hours later.
Riley had rounds of 67-1-66 and 68-1-67 for a two-round total of 133 which was one shot clear of Steve Price (78-10-68 and 76-10-66 for 134).
In third place, also with 134, was Steve Boyle with rounds of 69-4-65 and 73-4-69.
The second-round winner was Stuart Naismith (81-16-65) from Price (76-10-66) and Peter Bacon (79-13-66).
And a subsidiary for those not competing in the Millennium Trophy was won by Stuart Meakin (41pts) from Iain Thomas and Dennis Campbell (both 39).
Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford were Eric Hyland and Andrew Riley (45pts), on the card from John Hughes and John High. Third were M Isaacs and D Bidwell (43).
BLACKLEY beat Bury 5-0 in the Manchester Alliance Foursomes through Rob Munson and John Hibbert (4 & 3), John McDonald and Mark Hughes (4 & 3), Alan Lane and Duncan Teal (1 up), Alistair White and Billy Radcliffe (3 & 2), Darren Tickle and Keith Liddle (6 & 4).
They also defeated Worsley 5-2 in the Junior League thanks to Adam Bowler (8 & 7), Jimmy O’Loughlin (1 up), Callum Cornielle (3 & 2), Matthew Williams (4 & 3) and Gareth Saxon (3 & 2).
Vice-Captain’s Prize at STAMFORD produced an exciting finish in the four-ball betterball Stableford as three pairs finished with 63 points.
The winners, on the card, were Ian Trow and Paul Taylor. Rick Margrave and Phil Mellor were runners-up while third place went to Mike Burgreave and Stan Seddon.
Stamford were unlucky not to win through to the last 16 of the Dunham Forest Trophy, losing 4-3 at Stand where Chris Houfe lost the deciding match at the 20th.
The three Stamford winners were pro Mark Smith (4 & 2), David Batty (3 & 2) and James Woodcock (2 & 1).
Jack Suttie fired a three-under-par gross 64 for a nett 61 and victory in the first division of WERNETH’S monthly medal ahead of Ian Gillies (74-12-62).
Tom Hindley (77-19-58) produced a superb score to win division two from Alf Selby (77-16-61).
Father and son Paul and Adam Rowbotham and John Armstrong won a three-man Texas scramble with a score of 57-2.7-54.3.
Second, with 59-4.3-54.7, were Tony McNamara, Suttie and Johnny Wilde.
Nick Sunderland holds a commanding four-shot lead after the first round of the Vice-Captain’s Prize at SADDLEWORTH after returning 77-14-63.
Lying second is Steve Harrington (73-6-67), on the card from John Millward (85-18-67).
Winners of a four-ball betterball Stableford at OLDHAM were Ray Fry and Peter Dunbar who scored 46 points.
Runners-up were Mark Ruff and Mark Furnival (45pts) while third place went to Jack Roberts and Frank Lawrence (44).STEVE MURRAY triumphed in the Hiller Cup, a 36-hole major at Blackley after nett rounds of 70 and 62 for 132.
Losing out on the card for top spot was Joey Byrne whose 132 comprised returns of 65 and 67. One shot behind in third place was Dominic Marsden with 66 and 67 for 133.
A card play-off was also needed to determine the top two places in a medal as Alex Hughes (88-28-60) edged out Adam Bowler (83-23-60) for top spot. Third was Mike Scrivner (84-21-63).
Middleton Cricket Club claimed four of the top five places in the CLL Golf Society’s Observer Cup at Pike Fold.
Phil Burrows emerged the victor in the singles Stableford with 39 points, on the card from Mark Gardner. Dave Buckley (38pts) was third, on the card from Milnrow’s Mark Chadwick, while fifth was Tom Read (37).
