Jane in six-shot Captain’s success

JANE WILD claimed the honours in the Lady Captain’s prize at SADDLEWORTH, winning by six shots in the 36-hole event.
Her score of 180-42-138 was good enough to keep Kay Orme (156-12-144) in second place, a spot ahead of Rhoda Potts (204-60-144).
The first day prize was picked up by Anita Scholes (89-20-69) and Eileen Simpson performed best on the second day of competition (97-27-70).
On Saturday, the first round of the men’s captain’s prize took place and Nick Edwards finished top of the tree on 74-6-68, one shot ahead of Richard Hughes (73-4-69) and another clear of Roy Dobson (79-9-70).
JOYCE BEECH clinched the Lady President’s competition at Oldham after an 18-hole play-off with Karen Phanco.
The pair were tied on 38 points but in the play-off Joyce emerged the winner with 37 points to Karen’s 32.
Sweep winners were Mary Buckley and Sue Mangov-Jones, both recording 37 points.
The Firth Trophy mixed knockout - carried over from last year - was finally played and the major went to Phil Matthews and Bev Mercer (1 up), who defeated Steve Squires and Joyce Beech.
CROMPTON and Royton enjoyed a 4-3 Shield success at Brookdale with wins from Val Hall (5&4), Jean Heathcote (5&4), Madge Millett (3&2) and Jennifer Kenworthy (6&4).
However, they lost 6-1 at Manchester Hopwood, where Shirley Brown (1 up) was their only winner.
Jean Clarke (90-19-71) triumphed in an EGWA medal at BROOKDALE, on the card from second-placed Barbara Olivier (91-20-71).
WERNETH’S foursomes medal was won by Eileen Fallows and Dee Whittingham with a score of 102-26-76.
Sheila Lees and Kath Lomas won the first sweep with a round of 109-31.5-77.5, while the second sweep produced a tie between Pat Grant and Brenda Martin (104-25-79) and Stephanie Cocks and Gail Rowbotham (114-35-79).
