CAPTAIN’S Day at CROMPTON and ROYTON went right down to the wire.

Alan Hopkinson Jnr eventually emerged victorious courtesy of a superior second-round score.

He fired a 65 and 69 for 134, which was just good enough to see off Jordan Flint’s 64 and 70 effort.

The second-round winner was John Haigh (77-12-65) from Andy Simpson (72-5-67).

The best gross over the 36 holes was posted by Chris Rabbich, who had rounds of 69 and 74 for 143.

Meanwhile, Josh Briddon gathered 41 points to win the first division of a single Stableford.

The runner-up was PA Watson (40pts) from Mick Gazey (39pts) in third place.

Alex Hopkinson, with 40 points, clinched division two. Jim Perrin (39pts) was second, with Mark Power (37pts) in third, on the card from Roy Hornibrook.

Sunday’s Royton Sword was postponed because of a waterlogged course. No new date has been set.

SIMON TESSIER was the toast of WERNETH after he scooped top spot on captain’s day.

The nine-handicapper recorded rounds of 76-9-67 and 74-9-65 for a 132 total and a two-shot victory over Gary Whitworth. He had identical rounds of 80 -13 for 134.

The best gross was registered by Lee Rowbotham, who followed a 73 with an excellent 67 for 140.

Joe Cassidy (70-8-62) won the first division prize from Mark Wareing (74-9-65), while Andy Vickers (81-16-65) claimed division two honours from Tommy Dwayre (86-17-69).

Meanwhile, Andy Hey (10) won a medal-ford — the first nine holes are medal followed by a back nine of Stableford — from Paul Rowbotham (12). He was runner-up on the card from Peter Griffin and Ian Richardson.

LUKE DONALD failed to lift the Claret Jug at the Turnberry Open, but he did help two OLDHAM members to victory in the club’s Hidden Partner competition at the weekend.

Two members are, in theory, teamed up with a player from the Open championship field whose Saturday score is added to their total.

Winners were Steve Squires and Rick Fallon, whose 61 added to Donald’s 70 gave them 131.

They had 30 on the back nine to beat Martin Lewis and Ian McGloughlin, plus Thomas Aiken (62+69=131 - back nine 31), who in turn beat Dave Bruce and Eric Charles, plus Bryce Molder (64+67=131 - back nine 32).

The lowest nett was Gordon Howard and Ian Wooliscroft (58, with 27 on the back nine).

Sunday’s Stableford was won by Terry Kelly and Roger Stansfield (47 points) from Mike Allen and Mike Ganley (42) and Sam Gilbey and John Wheaton (41).

SATURDAY was another major day at STAMFORD, with the Rawson Cup and gold medal keenly contested by more than 150 members.

Winner was Rick Taylor, who carded a 73-9-64 (also the best gross). Second place went to Dave Mayor with 84-18-66, with Dave Pegg third with 86-18-68.

The weather took its toll on the Am-Am and this has been re-scheduled for August 16.
