AFTER 14 matches without defeat in the Manchester Premier League, Tonge’s Gary Ellis has surrendered his proud record.

Ellis, who won the league’s prestigious Last Man Standing trophy, was beaten 21–20 by Chris McDonald at the Railway Hotel, Congleton, on Wednesday night.

It was a bad evening all round for Tonge, who picked up only six points for their four away winners.

They were unable to secure the vital aggregate points despite victories for Nicky Brooks (21-8), Jimmy Derby (21-7), Thomas Dobson (21-13) and Stuart Mort 21-20 as Railway won 9-6 (174-160).

GARY Ellis, Jimmy Derby, Darren Griffiths and Andrew Buckley, all of whom play for Nimble Nook in the Chadderton League, provide a strong Oldham representation in the finals of the Tommy Braddock Memorial Trophy at Tottington BC tomorrow (5.30pm).

Also chasing the £600 top prize is Failsworth’s Lee Lawton, a member of the Waterloo and Taunton team.

BOB Carr (Springhead) won the Saddleworth League’s Tweed Cup and £80 top prize when he defeated Alan Rushton (Crompton) 21-15 in the final at Friezland.

In the semi-finals, Carr beat Crompton’s Bob Horrocks 21-15, while Rushton defeated Nimble Nook’s Steve Mellor 21-16.

Quarter-finals: Mellor 21, Malcolm Warhurst (Friezland) 9; Rushton 21, Frank Cassidy (Nimble Nook) 7; Horrocks 21, Lee Schofield (Hurst Band) 14; Carr 21, John Owen (Failsworth Libs) 20.
