Maximum haul puts Dukinfield on the brink
Date published: 05 August 2009
DUKINFIELD have one hand on the Oldham Golf League ‘A’ Division trophy after an 8-0 home win over Ashton.
They now have a 15-point lead and need only two points in their last game away at Brookdale to guarantee silverware.
And even that would only be necessary if Denton were to win both their outstanding home fixtures by the maximum margin.
Dukinfield’s handsome victory came courtesy of wins for Martin Schofield and John Cunningham, Rob Fawcett and Rick Devine, Gaz Beresford and Darren Ravenscroft and Chris Bamber and Mike Nitti.
The destination of the ‘B’ Division title is also looking clearer after Brookdale moved eight points ahead with a game in hand by beating Oldham 7-1 at a soggy Woodhouses.
There were wins for Gary and Graham Whittaker (4&2), Dave Harrison and Arthur Tattersall (3&1) and Paul Tunstall and Ian Thomas (9&8) as Oldham fielded only seven players.
Chris Gleave and John Strachan halved their match with Oldham’s Alex Simmons and Stuart Hanson.
Stamford kept their slim title hopes alive with a 5-3 victory over Denton.
Chris Akers and Simon Flynn (3&2) and Neil Pragnell and Gary Davies (4&3) picked up wins, while Terry Merson and Paul Whitehead halved.
Werneth were able to push Oldham to the foot of the table thanks to a 4-4 draw at Saddleworth, where Ron Bowden and Rick Riley, and Alan Goodall and Tony McNamara were their winners.
Saddleworth successes came via Nick Corrigan and team captain John Walsh, and Frank Pullen and Duncan Midgeley.
Half of the week’s fixtures fell victim to the weather.
Week 13 results –
‘A’ Division: Dukinfield 8, Ashton 0; Denton v Stamford, Werneth v Saddleworth, Oldham v Brookdale all postponed.
‘B’ Division: Stamford 5, Denton 3; Saddleworth 4, Werneth 4; Brookdale 7, Oldham 1. Ashton v Dukinfield postponed.
