Buckley bags top spot in Bury Open

NIMBLE Nook’s Andrew Buckley is £500 better off after winning the Huntley Unionist Open in Bury.

Buckley beat Middleport’s Nick Tideswell 21-18 in the final, having earlier defeated Mark Armson (Rochdale) 21-12, Steve Baskerville (Altrincham) 21-14, and Jason Cornes (Northwich) 21-6.

Buckley also has his sights set on the top prize in the £3,000 Moorside Classic after qualifying in convincing style with victories over Carl Lancaster, David Jarrett and Colin Brooks.

And he was joined in the last 16 by his pairs partner and Nook team-mate Darren Griffiths, who overcame Chris Hughes, Mike Gratton and Kevin Wainwright, conceding only 15 chalks in three games.

Graeme Wilson (Audenshaw) and Kevan Shaw (Wigan) were last week’s other qualifiers.

JIM Foster and John Whitmore (Delph) won the Oldham Veterans’ League’s Jack Fitton pairs competition with a 21-20 defeat of Wilf McDermott and Keith Prince (Springbank) at Moorside.

SPRINGBANK ‘A’ lifted the Chadderton League’s Swallow Cup thanks to a 43-points defeat of Westwood in the final at North Chadderton Social and Bowling Club.

Springbank overcame Royton ‘A’ in the semi-finals, while Westwood defeated Uppermill.
