Summer is fine for local lads

TWO local players have enjoyed a summer of success with their adopted club.

Mark Fitton, who has played for Cheshire-based Lymm RL since their inception last year, and Mick Cadd, who joined the Crouchley Lane outfit this campaign, were part of the squad that won the RL Conference North West grand final, beating Widnes Saints 20-10.

Fitton was desperately unlucky to miss out on the 17 for the game, having broken his foot in a league game against Blackpool, while powerful prop forward Cadd was a try scorer in the match to move his tally to six touchdowns in nine appearances.

The Oldham duo are now aiming up to go all the way to the national rugby league conference Grand Final in September.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers are the first of the three local National Conference League sides to get their campaigns started this season.

The Greenfield club face a midweek date at home to Bradford Dudley Hill next Wednesday, August 26 (7.30pm kick off), before taking the Carnegie Challenge Cup final weekend off along with Oldham St Anne’s and Waterhead.

Those two sides play their first games in division two on Saturday, September 5, with Saints entertaining Eastmoor Dragons and Waterhead travelling to face Stanley Rangers.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers are to run two under-18s teams this season and are appealing for interested players to step forward.

In addition to the side competing in the Gillette National Youth League, Rangers are to enter a side in the North-West Counties League. Training takes place at Churchill playing fields on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6.45pm onwards) and all old and new players are welcome to join in.

“Our youth section goes from strength to strength with end-of-season tours, numerous Super League academy sign-ups, and top class coaching,” said club chairman Terry Flanagan.

“In running this team we want to provide a great development platform for lads of 17 and 18 years and, most of all, keep them playing at an age when many drop out of the game.”
