SANTOS, from division two of the Lancashire and Cheshire League, were beaten 3-2 by Prestwich FC in round one of the Sharrocks Amateur Cup.
Behind to a cross-shot which deceived ’keeper Thomas Keating, Santos equalised courtesy of Dean Ashworth’s cool finish.
However, two quick goals left them with a mountain to climb in the second half.
Santos captain John Mayall’s penalty was saved and then he put the rebound wide.
They finally got a goal back through Chris Hadfield, but were unable to force extra despite.
In division one, AFC Oldham couldn’t build on their opening-day 3-0 win at Gatley as they lost 2-1 to Burnage Metro.
HEYSIDE’S Steve Partington soon discovered his scoring touch in division four of the Huddersfield and District League.
The hot-shot got all four goals in the opening-day 4-4 draw at Hade Edge.
Heyside displayed great tenacity, coming from behind on three occasions to grab a share of the spoils.
The first of Hade Edge’s goals was scored by the ’keeper, whose clearance caught the wind and bounced over the head of his opposite number.
Heyside’s second string made the perfect start with a 4-2 win over Uppermill ‘A’ in reserve division two.
Brett Kingsley, Chris Taylor, Terence Bark and Carl Winstanley were on target for Heyside, who were losing 2-1 at the interval.
RACHEL JONES and Stacey Trueman hit hat-tricks as Ashton United Ladies swept aside Padgate Ladies 9-2 in the Cheshire and Manchester Women’s League.
Also on target in the opening game of the season were Lisa Jones (two) and Holly Taylor.
