Union men in six-try romp

OLDHAM RUFC’S veterans were emphatic 38-0 winners away to Broughton’s second team.
Yet it was not until five minutes before half time that the Manor Park side made a breakthrough with a counter-attacking try.
Mark Fitton raced 60 yards to score after the ball had popped up to him from a ruck. John Selby kicked the conversion.
Oldham took command in the second period when they scored five further tries as Nick McDowell twice jinked his way through the Broughton defence. Fitton, Mark Hodge and Lee Moran also touched down.
Chris Davies, Daniel Simpson and John Selby added conversions while pack man Dom Hall was outstanding in the loose.
The ‘A’ XV failed to build on their previous week’s impressive win against Old Bedians as they lost 29-14 at Glossop.
It was disappointing as Oldham were 14-10 ahead at half time through tries from Rob Froggett, following an angled run, and Mike Green, who drove over the line from a maul.
Michael Collinge kicked two excellent conversions as Oldham found themselves in the driving seat.
However, Glossop took the lead just short of the hour mark and touched down twice more in the last quarter as Oldham wilted and were punished for lapses of concentration.
Extra ‘A’ also surrendered a half-time advantage as they were beaten 24-12 at home by Rochdale thirds.
Tries by Nick Hackman, following a storming run, and Anthony Beswick, together with a Daniel Brookes conversion gave Oldham a 12-8 interval lead.
Rochdale were revitalised after the break, scoring two tries and two penalties to win comfortably.
BRADFORD and England RL forward Sam Burgess has signed a four–year contract with South Sydney, starting from next season.
The 20–year–old prop or back rower was under contract to the Bulls until the end of the 2010 season but the Super League club have agreed a compensation fee with the Rabbitohs.
