Cheers at last for Boro

THERE was a happy ending to a desperate week at the Whitebank Stadium as Oldham Boro overcame Atherton Collieries 2-1 in division one of Vodkat North-West Counties League.
Boro officials spent the days before Saturday’s clash clearing up after a break-in at the ground, but they had something to cheer at the end of it thanks to goals from Arnold Nsimbe and Tom Hughes.
Collecting a pass from Darren Scanlan, Nsimbe cut inside from the left to score against his former club after 10 minutes.
Scanlan had a great chance to increase Boro’s lead in the second half, but he scuffed his shot, and Lee Deakin planted a header straight at the ’keeper.
The hosts paid for their profligacy in front of goal when Atherton equalised with 15 minutes to go through Paul Hynes.
But Boro were soon back in front. Hughes benefited from some hesitancy in the visitors’ defence to lob the ’keeper and hand Tony Mills’ side their first win in seven games.
NEW-BOY James Curley was sent off as Chadderton slumped to a 5-1 defeat at high-flying Stone Dominoes in division one of the NWCL.
The forward, signed last Wednesday by the Broadway outfit after being released by Oldham Boro, was dismissed in the first half for violent conduct. Chadderton plan to appeal.
Dominoes scored soon after to lead 2-1 at the break — Simon Elldershaw and Dan Brown got the goals — before they took advantage of some slipshod defending in the second half to end the visitors’ gutsy resistance.
A mistake at the back gifted the home side an early goal, but Chadderton responded when Martin Love converted a Liam Radcliffe cross.
Gaining in confidence, Curley kept the Dominoes goalkeeper on his toes, while Love skimmed the crossbar.
Chadderton lost momentum once they were reduced to 10 men, but they still created a couple of chances for Andy Pheby.
However, they had it all to do after ’keeper Liam Swanson somehow threw the ball into his own net after collecting a cross.
The comedy of errors continued for Dominoes’ fourth and fifth goals scored by Andy Matthews and Brown respectively, to leave Paul Buckley’s men in the bottom six.
STEVE Moore’s late, late goal earned Mossley a 1-1 draw at Brackley Town in the second-qualifying round of the Carlsberg FA Trophy.
He struck in the sixth-minute of the injury time to extend the Lilywhites’ unbeaten run to 11 games after former Coventry City striker Ben Mackey had put the Zamaretto League premier division side ahead.
The replay at Seel Park will take place tomorrow night (kick-off 7.45pm).
