SPIRITED Springhead Libs caused an upset to reach round three of the D&J Builders (North-West) Ltd OIdham Sunday League’s Challenge Cup.

With only one win in division two this season, they were very much the underdogs when they went head to head with Northside, who are seven places above them in the table and challenging for promotion.

But Springhead put their league struggles to one side to record a thrilling 5-4 success.

Khartoum Northern, from the Jack Abbott premier division, face a replay after they were held to a 4-4 draw against David Giblin division one outfit Red Star.

Chaddy End, the holders, played host to Coppice United in a repeat of last season’s final, and the top-flight rivals will also meet again after sharing six goals.

In another all premier division clash, pacesetters High Crompton swept aside Failsworth Dynamos 4-0.

Failsworth Athletic hit Bridge Inn for six, and Royton Athletic also scored half-a-dozen goals as they dumped Crompton and Royton out of the competition.

Oddies Athletic have also got their eyes on the prize after they passed a tricky test with flying colours.

They defeated Rife Range Royal Blues, who boast a 100-per-cent record in division two, 6-2.

Westwood, who are in the lower reaches of division one, registered a morale-boosting 5-3 win over Old Grey Mare, and FC Royton overcame Limeside Athletic ‘B’ 1.

The only fixture in division one between Rose of Lancaster and Limeside Athletic ‘A’ was postponed, but Lowerhouse United ‘B’ enjoyed a 5-3 win at North Star Athletic in division two.
