Away-day defeat wrecks record

DIGGLE produced a performance devoid of any real quality or style as they suffered their first defeat of the season in division one of the Huddersfield and District League.

Steve Southern’s side, unbeaten in their previous eight matches, lost 2-0 at Shepley.

Diggle, who had a lack of ideas going forward, slipped to second place as a result.

Goalless at the interval, Jeff Whittaker and Chris Moore had half-chances to break the deadlock, but they were unable to find a way through.

The home side went in front against the run of play just after the hour mark and, despite pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Diggle never looked like breaking through.

And it was Shepley who clinched victory with a goal on the break.

Meanwhile, Michael McCabe struck five times for title-chasing Heyside, who took their goals tally beyond 50 in the league with an emphatic 10-0 defeat of Lindley in division four.

The local outfit scored seven in the first half and it would have been more but for a fine display by the visiting ’keeper.

James Taylor, Joe Mannion, Jordan Smithies, Nick Campbell and Carl Winstanley were the other marksmen.

Despite their game against Shepley being postponed, Diggle’s second team still lead the way in reserve division one.

Uppermill moved within touching distance of their local rivals — they are two points adrift of top-spot — after goals from Joe Jacombs (two) and Ryan Hughes clinched a 3-1 win over Heywood Irish Centre.

In reserve division two, Heyside paid the penalty for a sloppy start as they were beaten 6-4 at basement boys Wooldale Wanderers.

They trailed 4-1 at the interval, but a much-improved display in the second half saw Heyside storm back to draw level.

However, all their hard work was undone when Wooldale scored twice in the last five minutes.

Uppermill ‘A’ picked up a point in a 1-1 draw at Meltham Athletic ‘A’.

In division one of the Works League, Uppermill’s third team shared eight goals with Hepworth United.
