Finishing touch eludes Town

ROYTON Town wasted a glut of chances as they slipped to their sixth defeat of the season in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division.

The Glebe Street outfit were beaten 3-0 at lowly Chapel Town, despite dominating possession.

Excellent chances fell to Wayne Dean, Chris Mackay and Carl Caffrey, plus numerous other decent openings, but none were converted on a cold and blustery day in the Derbyshire hills.

Chapel took advantage of some lapses in defence to lead 2-0 at half-time, but Town remained confident of coming away with a point at least.

And it seemed only a matter of time that Town would score as they spent most of the second half encamped in the Chapel half.

However, their day was summed up when a ‘shinned’ volley from 25 yards looped over the head of the Town ’keeper for the home side’s third goal.

Hollinwood are the highest-placed of the four local teams in the top-flight after a 2-0 win over Hindsford lifted Paul Bennett’s men into third place. See John Gilder’s Match of the Day.

Avro had a blank weekend, while Springhead’s County Cup tie at home to Osset Town was postponed.
