Cup test for Mossley

NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: HOSTS FC Halifax Town stand in the way of Mossley and a place in round three of the President’s Cup tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

It is a clash of two in-form teams from UniBond League division one north.

The Lilywhites go into the game on the back of a 14-match unbeaten run, while the Shaymen boast 10 wins from 13 league matches. They are seven points adrift of pacesetters Colwyn Bay, but have four games in hand.

Meanwhile, Chris Willcock has boosted his frontline options by re-signing last season’s leading scorer Mike Fish.

The striker, who bagged 20 goals for Mossley, was unable to break in to the Curzon Ashton starting XI after leaving Seel Park and was mostly limited to appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

But midfielder Joe Shaw has joined Trafford in search of regular football.

OLDHAM Boro boss Tony Mills is tipping Barnoldswick Town to win division one of the Vodkat North-West Counties League this season.

“They were tremendous,” said the Whitebank Stadium chief after seeing his side beaten 4-0.

“We were chasing shadows a lot of the time. They kept it simple and did the basics very well.

“I would go as far to say, that they are probably the best side I’ve seen in my five years here as manager.”

Town are in third place, seven points adrift of Stone Dominoes, while Boro are languishing fourth from bottom.

Mills was down to the bare bones for Saturday’s game — he could only name two substitutes — but hopes to increase the strength of his squad this week.

CHADDERTON, who suffered a second consecutive wash-out last weekend in NWCL division one, are benefiting from new training gear worth £300.

Tops, bibs, cones, poles and balls were sent to the Broadway outfit courtesy of Tesco on Huddersfield Road.

“It was a superb gesture,” said Chadderton manager Paul Buckley. “We contacted them a couple of months ago and they were only too willing to help out.”
