Still waters run deep for Dean

ANGLING: DEAN Pickering boasts a great canal-fishing record for the Tri-Cast Rochdale squad.
And he is not too bad on still waters, either, as he showed in the Monarch AC match fished on their Monarch Lodge water.
Fishing the pole with caster on the hook, Dean caught carp and chub for a match-winning haul of 11lb 15oz.
Runner-up Craig Bamford, using a pole and pinkie approach, netted chub and ide totalling 7lb 10oz.
And Pete Molloy was third as his maggot feeder and maggot on the hook netted him 7lb 9oz.
That was too good for John Wood, whose 6lb 4oz net was made up of roach and chub which fell for pole and maggot.
THERE was a tie in the latest Chadderton Mill AC winter league match as both Graham Mitchell (GTI Gilders) and teenager Aden Bodiak (Tightlines, Shaw) tipped a level 27lb on to the scales.
Graham was drawn on peg 14 where he caught half a dozen carp averaging about 4lb apiece, as well as skimmers and ide which fell to either maggot fished on the tip cast towards the island or on the pole fished on the deck.
Drawn on peg six, Aden decided on the pole at 11 metres with maggot fished at full depth where he caught a steady supply of carp and ide.
Mick Tighe (Gilders) was third with five carp and some ide taken on maggot fished out in front and up against a tree.
He weighed in 24lb 8oz, relegating previous match winner Paul Hill (Gilders) into fourth with 22lb 8oz.
John Lees (Gilders) was next with 19lb.
ALBERT Morris runs some cracking matches on the local canals and last week’s contest, fished on the Miners Arms length of the Macclesfield Canal, attracted anglers from Oldham and the rest of the North-West.
Dave Chadwick won with 4lb 4oz of small roach and skimmers using bread and caster as bait.
Runner-up Eon Wilson’s 4lb 3oz owed a lot to a 2lb perch taken on worm.
John Edwards might be a rough and ready angler, but he can certainly fish as hundreds of wins and many more placings testify.
John fished at various lengths with bread punch, collecting 3lb 14oz of small roach and skimmers to push Lennie Cosgrove into fourth with his 3lb 12oz.
Section winners were Oldham angler Dave Brierley with 3lb 3oz, Doug Darbyshire with 2lb 6oz and Ged Martin (2lb 13oz).
OLDHAM’S Billy Brierley loves his maggot fishing and he underlined his prowess in that discipline with victory in the Partridge Lakes open match fished on Covey Lake.
Fishing the margins and slightly further out with pole and maggot, Billy caught a steady stream of carp and ide to finish with 43lb 1oz.
That was a fair way ahead of Craig Ebbrell (37lb 1oz) and Alan Sharman (35lb 3oz).
STUART Holmes (Tightlines, Shaw) made the trip to Langwith Lakes worthwhile by taking first place with 56lb of carp.
Walt Lazenby was second with 53lb 4oz, followed by Richard Holmes (51lb).
THE Calder and Hebble Canal fished well for the Pennine Winter League, Simon Walton topping the weights with 12lb 11oz of roach which fell for bread punch and caster.
Alan Crook was second with a bread-based 12lb 8oz, followed by Alan Dargue’s 10lb 6oz.
