Solid defence helps Hulmeians triumph

AMATEUR FOOTBALL: A FINE rearguard performance saw Oldham Hulmeians triumph 2-0 at Rochdale St Clements reserves in division two of the Lancashire Amateur League.
Simon Toms drilled in an early opener before Danny Proffitt doubled the lead with a volley from an acute angle.
But Hulmeians’ victory was built on an outstanding defensive display, particularly from goalkeeper Chris Frankland whose handling was immaculate in the wet conditions.
Chaddertonians had to come from behind on three occasions to draw 3-3 at home to lowly Horwich RMI in the premier division.
Rob Fielding, Steve Barrow and substitute Damian Hardman scored for Chadds, who left it late to earn a share of the spoils.
Chadds ‘A’ made it five wins on the trot with a 3-1 defeat of Old Boltonians ‘A’ 3-1 in division four.
Jordan Scholes bagged a brace and Dale Myers got the other, and the ‘B’ team beat Old Mancunians ‘B’ 2-1 thanks to goals from Jak O’Dea and Mark Flint.
Meanwhile, hat-tricks from Gary Sykes and Elliot McKinnell saw Hulmeians reserves crush Lymm ‘A’ 7-1 in division five. John Hurst was also on target for the hosts.
But it was an altogether different story for Hulmeians ‘A’, who slumped to a 7-2 defeat against Radcliffe Town ‘B’ in division seven.
In the Manchester County Cup, Failsworth Dynamos overcame Gorse Hill 2-1, but the reserves were beaten 2-1 by Barrhill in the Manchester Amateur Cup. Mike Brady scored the consolation goal.
