Stamford pair in Alliance success

GOLF: STAMFORD professional Mark Smith and three-handicapper Matthew Nixon teamed up to win the Manchester Alliance four-ball better-ball tournament at Withington Golf Club.
The pair scored 46 points to win the event, while Smith also collected the professionals’ prize with 40 points.
MALCOLM Penney, Terry Donovan, Jimmy Frizzell and Lenny Hayes combined to finish ahead of the field in CROMPTON and ROYTON’S team Stableford for seven and eight-handicappers.
Their total of 72 was three superior to the score posted by Tim O’Brien, Stuart Thompson, Roy Hornibrook and M Kershaw.
Jordan Flint, Mike Flint, George Shepherd and Jordan Abbott (67) were third.
ADAM Rowbotham and Dave Jones won a tightly-contested four-ball Stableford turkey shoot at WERNETH, played over two days at the weekend.
They scored 43 points to finish ahead of Dave Burton and Phil Fogarty on a card play-off, with Alf Selby and Kevin Roberts third.
MARK Ruff and Paul Pattison combined to win a four-ball better-ball Stableford competition at Oldham.
After scoring 46 points, they won a card play-off against John Baines and Colin Ingle, who in turn edged out Martin Lewis and Barry Lewis on countback.
Sunday’s four-ball, better-ball Stableford saw Norman Radcliffe snr and Alex Simmons come out on top with 47 points.
Second were Damian Chadwick and Sean Dixon (46), ahead of Steve Mills and John Bramhall (45).
DAVE Fox and Ian Buckley won a turkey shoot at SADDLEWORTH, finishing 8up.
Mike Taylor and Dave Green (6up) were second, while Neil Bamford and Steve Dawson (5up) were third.
Dave Baldwin scored 43 Stableford points to win the latest Pro’s Winter League event at BLACKLEY. Second was Garry Baldwin (42), while Alex Hampson defeated Steve Newton (both 41) on the card for third.
Garry Baldwin leads the overall standings on 25 points. Next come Andy Bardsley (21) and Dave Baldwin (17).
