A HOST of local talent helped Lancashire Under-19s beat their Yorkshire counterparts 26-12 at Elmpark Way, Heworth.

Yorkshire needed to win by 15 points to take the county championship but were well up against it once Oldham St Anne’s centre Greg Worrall had racked up two first-half tries.

The home side nevertheless led 12-8 at half-time, before Lancashire powered home after the break thanks also to contributions from Saddleworth Rangers trio Tom Hurdus, Kurtis Marsh and Tom Whitehead, plus St Anne’s man Ben Marsden.

The senior Lancashire country side, featuring St Anne’s star David Cookson at centre, lost 32-20 at the same venue, a result which meant Yorkshire retained their county title.

SADDLEWORTH School’s Year Eight team performed superbly in atrocious conditions to defeat St Augustine’s of St Helens in round two of the Carnegie Champion Schools trophy.
Tries came from Dan Fairfoul (three), Mat Jackson (two), man-of-the-match Aaron Longley (two), Matty Fletcher, Isaac Johnson, Jonny Aspin and Billy McDermott.

Captain Paul Ainsworth knocked over eight goals despite gale force winds and though St Augustine’s battled bravely, they were overpowered on the day by a quicker and stronger outfit.

Saddleworth now face St Aelred’s of St Helens, St Cuthbert’s of Rochdale or the Swinton High School in the last 16 of the North-West region.
