Young guns bow to big shots

AMATEUR FOOTBALL: THE visit of table-topping Chew Moor Brook to Brierley Avenue was always going to be a daunting prospect for Failsworth Dynamos in the premier division of the Lancashire Amateur League.

And so it proved, with the Bolton-based side emerging 2-0 winners on a day when the elements contributed to a lack of quality football.

Incessant rain and a gusty wind meant that the physically stronger side might gain an advantage over the 90 minutes.

Dynamos, with an average age of just 20 and with a fast growing reputation for playing good, passing football, found both the conditions and the greater experience of their opponents a shade too much to handle on this occasion.

Dynamos’ cause wasn’t helped when they went behind after only two minutes, yet for long periods of the game it looked as though they might just snatch a point.

However, Brook wrapped up the points with a killer second goal with 20 minutes left.

Before that, Terry Qualters and Liam Stuttard had a chance apiece for Dynamos as the home side dominated proceedings for a spell.

Dynamos secretary Neil Blood said: “The majority of our team have been with us since the age of seven and they have been brought up to play good football.

“The weather certainly didn’t help us but Chew Moor are top of the league with some very experienced players.

“Their centre forward was 6ft 5in and they had a very strong defence.

“This is our second season in the top flight and, although we might be in the end-of-season shake-up, I think realistically it would be good if we can finish as a top-half team.”
The togetherness and spirit of the club is evident — Michael Shenton, Daniel Mills, Wayne Kennedy, Lee Ashton, Jake Wharton and Ben Lawson have been regular players since the age of 15.
